Although I don’t see many weaknesses with the program, I did a note a few. Some of the disadvantages of the SPIn assessment tool is the amount of data that needs to be entered for each individual person, which can become very time consuming. Those who use SPIn will also require a lot of training. Another disadvantage of SPIn is the amount of repeated supervision the assessment tool needs to detect changes.
The four main components of the SPIn assessment tool are the initial assessment (mapping), developing offender motivation (finding the hook), implementing services, interventions, and appropriate ways to supervise (moving forward), and managing the case plan as it progresses (reviewing and supporting). With that in mind, I would consider SPIn to be a fourth generation assessment tool.
Fourth generation assessment tools are designed to focus on risk management, intervention modes, treatment targets, and the assessment for treatment progress. Re-assessments are also required to assess the offenders needs and to implement any changes that may be necessary.
