Our 44th president Barack Obama once said “The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something, Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” Obama is trying to tell us that we should go out and do good things by helping others. By helping others, you’re providing service to others. Giving back to your community and helping others is just a part of life. You may not receive an incentive for your service, but you have greatly affected them in a positive way! As a squad leader in my platoon, I am responsible for leading and taking charge of my squad. This includes attendance, assigning tasks to my squad member, and motivating …show more content…
During our LET 1 year, we learned the seven army value, one of them being selfless service. One of our major project that year was on service learning. Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates community service and enrich learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen community. It was mandatory and it was worth a test grade, but it was still a great opportunity for my group to use what we learn and use it in the real world. My group and I volunteered at Apple Tree Daycare located in Oakland Gardens, NY. We had a chance to work with kids and give back to the community. I read multiple books to kids and I had a chance to interact with them. Many kids were happy to see us playing with them. We knew we were not going to get anything in return, but what mattered was we made a difference in those kid’s …show more content…
After the daycare visit, I felt great about what I have done. I realized doing something as small as reading to kids and playing with kids makes a difference. I also learned to be unselfish by serving others. Most of the time, you don’t get a reward for serving others or you just don’t realize the reward you got. For example, in my case, I gained multiple skill that would help me in the future. I didn’t realize it at first, but interacting with the kids help me improve in public speaking. Most importantly, whatever your passion is, however you get involved, volunteering offers a way to have a lasting impact on your

The communities people live in today are being formed by a multitude of political groups, volunteering opportunities, and immigrants. Living in a small town does not open a person’s eyes to all the hopes and dreams of others. Through these three service learning opportunities, Into the Streets, Mary Treglia Community House, and Presidential campaigns; I have learned how they impact our communities, the concepts of citizens, and my weaknesses and strengths when it comes to participating. For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I volunteered at the Forest Mall for the Tootsie Roll Drive. This organization provides service for those people with intellectual disabilities. What I physically did while volunteering at the Forest Mall was hand out Tootsie Rolls outside to the people that donated money. I also would kindly ask people to donate as they came in or out of the mall. I kept a kind and loving smile on my face to welcome anyone who was willing to donate.…

Service to others has played a big part of my high school career. I am an instructor for a middle school indoor winterline group and I am specifically in charge of the colorguard members and their work. When I am with the group, I help instruct and show these young students the correct way to do dance, colorguard, and performance. By teaching them, it has lead me to develop my own skills, like communication, leadership, and my own dance and colorguard skills. Also, another reason service is important in my life is because of the relationships I gain.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

The most important effect that incentives/disincentives had on my service learning was were to complete it followed by when to complete it. I made my decision to complete my service learning at NYSMM pretty quickly after getting the assignment. The incentives/disincentives were pretty clear almost immediately, With the NYSMM I had to complete a transcript which would take only as long as it took to me to complete it instead of a preset amount of time. Secondly, I didn’t have to travel anywhere. This meant I saved time and gas money from not having to travel to some location in order to complete my service learning.…

One of the activities I do that is substantial to me is volunteering as a Kettle Host during Winter for the Salvation Army. Through Christmas Kettles, I collect donations from the society to help give back to the less fortunate in our community. What volunteering for the Salvation Army has taught me is that even the smallest effort can make a tremendous impact. When I first started off as a volunteer, I did not feel motivated enough to believe what I was doing would truly have an impact. I had this mindset which led me to believe that the happenings in our community did not concern me, although, I began to have a change of opinion as I kept volunteering.…

Everyday, thousands of high school students immerse themselves in their community and create satisfaction in helping others in need. Community service is a critical aspect of teen development. Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue. Three words that best describe my service-learning experience would be enlightening, appreciative, inspirational.…
