The first key of service learning is to start out with preparation. Preparation is success. You can’t walk into a classroom and expect things to run smoothly without any sense of direction. Preparation takes time and focus. To provide proper service learning, one should have a clear overview of the entire project including steps needed to evaluate and celebrate the project. Throughout the project, end goals should be clear and should be understood by everyone participating. The next step in quality service learning is Collaboration. Collaboration in service learning means that everyone involved, be that students, teachers, other faculty, or community members, must be in communication with each other and all help work together to develop a program that is within the best interests of all the participants. While most service learning would be conducted by adult figures, youth empowerment is a goal in any quality youth service program. You need to incorporate the youth into the program and help guide them so they maintain an interest in the group and

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

Being and older student with an established carreer, I was a little unsure on where to conduct my service learning project. In the class syllabus it states that the pupose of the service learning project is: “To connect course materials to policies and practices implemented through agencies to serve victims and survivors of interpersonal and power based violence. It is designed to encourage critical evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches to serving victims of violence” (Criminal Justice 403. n.d.).…

For my service learning project, I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Gregg County, which is one of the centers that had merged with the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines in Marshall (Cromer, 2016). The mission statement of the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines is “To empower the kids of East Texas to be great” (About the Club, 2016). In addition to this statement, the organization as a whole seeks “To inspire and equip all young people, especially those that need us most, to achieve their full potential as healthy, productive, responsible caring citizens” (About the Club, 2016). The statement is apparent when I was volunteering. The students of various ages were given the opportunity to enhance their skills.…

It usually relates traveling to the town mayor’s office and bringing up a concern. I was unaware that most colleges associate it with service learning. To me service learning is associated with volunteering and reflection about the service. My view of college service has been slightly altered because of this information, because I now understand that college service learning is not the same as civic engagement. Civic engagement is a broader topic and umbrella, and could be associated with service learning and volunteering if…

My Service Learning activity, the Ars Poetica Collaboration, was one of the most exciting yet difficult projects that I have completed at Tennessee State University. Through this project I was forced to make sacrifices for the benefit of the group and our work. Yet, by doing this, I was able to gain a better understanding of my peers and their wonderful talents. The most challenging part of this Service Learning Activity was working with people who were not English majors or poets. Although the Mass Communications students were amazing, they did not know much about poetry.…

Having service learning be part of the class curriculum made the material more meaningful. It allowed us to apply the concepts we learned by separating ourselves from the typical form of learning and have us be actively involved. I do not think I would have experienced the same lessons and feel the same way if we did this class with no service learning or time to reflect. Taking the time to ponder about what is around us helps us to process information, uncover and see new perspectives. It is the process of combining both of these aspects that makes learning more…
