Service learning project
For my service learning project, I choose to interview a coworker. I honestly did not know if he was religious or not, but my gut told me he was going to be a great interview. I really took this opportunity to not only learn about a different religion, but to learn about a person as well. I do not consider myself a bad person just because I am not “religious”. I just have not dedicated the time to learn what religion suits my beliefs. In doing this project I intend to hopefully gather some insight on how religions influence people. Prior to this project all I knew about “Joe” was I could not stand the man. He is rude, a know it all, and very abrasive. So Joe and I just so happened to be working the same case, meaning

I asked Joe if he considers himself to be religious. Joe said yes he is very religious, and went on to explain that he is Muslim. Joe said he didn’t want to elaborate because he knows I would be offended with what he thinks about Catholicism. I am a married Hispanic woman, so he assumed I was Catholic. As I learned in this class, "Muslim" means "anyone or anything that surrenders itself to the true will of God. To add to Joe’s mystique, he married a Jehovah’s Witness so they have very strong differences in opinions. When Joe and his Wife learned they were expecting, they made the decision to give the kids the option to choose a religion when they are older. Ever since then, the kids are free to take part in whatever rituals they have a calling to. Joe was raised Catholic and has very strong dislike for Catholic views. Starting with Confession. Joe said it baffles him to think you can do whatever wrong you want in the world, as long as you basically apologize and confess to a “Father”. I explained that not all sins are automatically forgiven …show more content…
However, I did learn that Joe is focused on his God 24/7. What seems to be a rude demeanor, really is just Joe being respectful. Joe respects that I am a married woman, and he does not want to cross any inappropriate lines. We finished our case with a better understanding of each other. By having Joe participate in this service learning project, I feel I did gain a friend. Which is the important thing in any religion. You can never go wrong when you find love for your fellow

According to the text joe was found, “ smashing roadside mailboxes drunk” ( Page 13) I said previously Joe has a serious alcohol and cigarette problem, this just supports my statement. Joe did this back in 8th grade which would be underage drinking. This just makes him a terrible role model in general. Also, this present he is a disgusting person, if Joe was never as terrible or if he never existed would he have told Michael to lie?…

I choose to speak to Mrs. Williams for my first service learning paper. She is retired, married, and a mother of two children. At age 11 she started work on a plantation to help earn money for her family, after her father’s sudden death. Working at such a young age prevented her from receiving an education. She feels ashamed for not being able to read or write, which kept her from building friendships because she did not want anyone to know of lack of education.…

Starting my service learning experience was difficult at first but after planning and figuring out what I wanted to achieve from it, it became easier to accomplish. In the beginning of planning my SLE I knew that I wanted to help donate to a big organization. I repeatedly told myself “the smallest action can make a huge change”. It was a challenge to figure out where I was going to get the money from in order to donate. That was until I meet Ivonne Farfan, the owner of “RENTMEUSA”.…

For my service learning project, I tutored at Central Community College in the ESL classroom. The class consisted of usually around nine or ten adults aging around twenty-one to fifty or sixty year olds. After Mrs. Alma taught her lesson, it was my job to go around and assist the students if they had trouble completing their worksheets. The class was in need for more native English speakers to assist with the learning process of the students. Even though there were not that many students, I had a positive impact being there because I could have more one on one time with the students to explain the answers and why the answers were correct.…

I worked as a coordinator for student professional development in an office called Center for Academic Service Learning and Research at Azusa Pacific University as a graduate assistant last year. I was in charge of assisting and mentoring eight student workers, planning for office events, and participating in end of semester evaluations. Service Learning creates opportunities for students to practice what they have learned in class and put into practice at the local communities where everyone benefits from the process; the main job of our office is to be the bridge to connect students, faculty, and the community partners. Most significant task of the student workers is to attend the service learning courses in the beginning and the end of…

The community will be benefitting from the service provided as well all while the students are exposed to a more open mind set.…

The Service Learning Symposium was held on November 10th from 4:00-6:00 in the CLC Ballroom. I was dreading going because the last event I went to in the CLC had a huge wait due to signing in. Surprisingly, there was no line and signing in took about a second. This is probably due to the fact that they had the sign in sheets split up at 2 separate tables on both sides of the doorway. Around the CLC Ballroom a bunch of tri-folds were set up.…

For my service learning placement, I am giving time to the guidance counselor, Mr. Berns, at Orchard Hill Elementary. His job works with children in kindergarten to sixth grade. He provides support to others through difficult situations, supplements education on living a healthy mental and emotional lifestyle, and addresses any issues that are causing a barrier to a student’s everyday learning. Although I have only been volunteering here for a few weeks, I believe I have had the opportunity to witness two theories acquired through class content. These practices are the most applicable to the audience and the needs being addressed at my organization.…
