Register to read the introduction… The room was big enough to hold people from different floors. It was located at the bottom of a ramp which made assistance necessary for the majority of residents coming or leaving the room. There was an elevator used near the room that required assistance operating and helping residents to their rooms. The room had a refrigerator filled with goodies as well as a small kitchen with an oven. Some of my time was spent in the residents halls and going to their rooms with snacks and drinks. A favorite nostalgic country music and variety TV show was shown in the resident lounge which housed a big screen TV as well as a large glass birdhouse with exotic birds. The smells varied throughout my experience from freshly baked cake to the fetid smell of some rooms to a distinctive “hospital smell” in other rooms.
What kind of tasks did you do while serving?

During “happy hour,” I would assist in going to residents’ rooms and offering snacks and drinks. I assisted in other activities such as baking and bingo. I helped bring residents to and from the activity room. General things such as passing out cards and chips for bingo or serving tea or coffee I was able to take care of so the coordinator could focus on the main task at hand. I was also able to directly interact with residents by running games of bingo and assisting residents in making a cake.

This experience is unique in how resonate with my own experiences and truly engages me in ways that I simply would not be able to simply by learning about it in a classroom.
In what way did your service-learning experiences express the mission of the University of St. Thomas?
I signed up to volunteer at St. Mary’s Home—a nursing home near St. Thomas. Because my father works there, I have been to St. Mary’s many times before. However, volunteering there was very new to me.
I had to understand the circumstances in which people were in and how interact with residents respectfully and compassionately which provided opportunities for personal growth by practicing integrity, justice and good stewardship. Though I was a bit hesitant, my experience has been very positive. Just being a volunteer without any related experience or skills, I was unqualified to help and many ways. The few menial tasks that I was able to do seemed to be met with much enthusiasm and appreciation. Simply helping someone to their seat bringing them a cup of tea or making conversation was enough make a smile. My goal was to help change everyone’s day for the better in what little ways I can and I think my experience reflects my

On the first night, a group called “Nuns on the Bus.” was also volunteering, so we had some limited duties. However, we labeled blankets, sheets, and towels that had been donated from a local hotel. Surprisingly, the ripped and worn linens were being used because the Center needs these basic items. By doing that, we were helping provide the clients with the ability to shower and sleep with linens provided for them. On the second night, I worked in the laundry room.…

When I decided to volunteer at the Del Amo Gardens Care Center, I wasn’t quite sure if I was emotionally ready. In March of 2013, my grandpa suffered a very severe stroke. It caused so much damage that it paralyzed half of his body, so we had to put him in a nursing home. Shortly after starting my volunteering, however, any negativity faded away as I was eager to assist with the activities.…

Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

I was fourteen when I first discovered what it meant to be a volunteer; and I utterly despised it. Waking up bright and early Saturday morning to work without pay or compensation was such a bizarre idea to me because I did not understand why volunteers were always so cheerful and happy at early morning hours, when I in contrast, would have much rather been in the comfort of my bed fast asleep. But it did not take me long to succumb to the contagious chipper attitude -I was soon transformed into one of them. One of the people who look forward to community events like Parent’s Place Informational Fair, in which I could help people find the information they need to provide better care for their special needs child, or going down to the county…

Volunteering at The Salvation Army I realized this was my chance to make a difference. When people hear that a person is “homeless,” I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is a bum, dirty clothes, a drug addict, and a drunk. However, that is not the case at all. Living in times like these, recession plays a huge role on unemployment rates which eventually leads to homelessness. Not only that but natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy, left thousands of people homeless in New York.…
