According to Tomlinson, altering instruction to facilitate the ultimate success for a student is not always related to learning challenges (1999). The study points out how differentiated instruction can also be used if there is a cultural disconnect (Tomlinson, 1999). It is important though that the key take away from what is being taught even after the shift is made so that the students are all on the same learning level (Tomlinson, 1999). Differentiated instruction and learning is designed to help students reach their highest potential by learning in a way easiest for them. The way this is accomplished is by modifying the content, process, and product of learning for each student (Rotatori, Obiakor, & Bakken,2013). Each of these components is an essential part to differentiated instruction. The content relates to the actual material/subject being taught; process is the the way the material is presented to the class (Rotatori, Obiakor, & Bakken,2013). During the process stage is when differentiation strategies are crucial. Lastly, the product is the student’s growth and what they have learned from the lesson (Rotatori, Obiakor, & Bakken,2013). However, educators need to be cognizant of where each student is so they remain consistent. If there appears to be a gap, the educator must revaluate how they are differentiating. Educators do not have all the answers, all the time.…

As each week passes by, another few hours are added to the total for service learning. Though, patience is something that is constantly being tested, it is more of the small interactions that I leave remembering. For this particular visit for this entry, the topic of college arose. With no surprise, the kids that attend each week are curious about who we are, and where we come from; it is only human nature to be inquisitive about people you’ve never met before. Any minor chat about college always begins with discussing graduation year and major, and this was no different. What caught me off guard by this exchange was the young girl, who wanted to know everything and anything, later mentioned she wouldn’t go to college because her parents…

I wish to improve lives and people’s days, even if it is something incredibly minimal like making a child smile by coloring a picture for them. I want to feel invested in my community. It is these reasons which lead me to choose working with the America Learns after school program at the Tobin K-8 School. There are opportunities and instances every day when I feel like I have made an impact in a student’s life.…

I learned many lessons about how to make a difference in this world with service learning. I feel like the lesson that really stood out for me was learning how to plan and train for my exploratory project. Covenant House, being the first service learning project I’ve done, I wasn’t quite sure on what to do. Learning how to strategize on what to do for the Covenant House, assisted me a lot. There are a variety of different service learning projects one can do. There’s the Red Cross, YMCA, Animal Shelters, Nursing Homes, the Food Bank, and The Covenant House. Selecting one of these few choices is a challenge. This lesson helped me think about how I felt about each option as a project, showing me the difference in each and every one of them and how I should choose one that I feel I would contribute more. The lesson helps me organize the project in order to know exactly what we are doing so we don’t have any faults while participating in the service learning project. This lesson helped me know exactly what and what not to…
