My Service Learning activity, the Ars Poetica Collaboration, was one of the most exciting yet difficult projects that I have completed at Tennessee State University. Through this project I was forced to make sacrifices for the benefit of the group and our work. Yet, by doing this, I was able to gain a better understanding of my peers and their wonderful talents. In Teaching for Joy and Justice renowned author Linda Christensen explore how to make student’s learning for reading and writing meaningful. She argues that in order for students to see purpose and meaning in their writing they must be assigned writing assignments that have real world application. In order for this to happen, the teacher must assign writing projects that allow students to share their writing with the world—having an authentic audience. For my project this week I decided to take this idea of having an authentic audience and placing that in the center of my student’s writing. I want my future students to not write for just the teacher, but to write for the world.…

Service Learning and Self-Authorship Service learning provides an excellent opportunity to promote students’ development toward self-authorship (being able to recognize that what happens in the world and in one’s life is often beyond one’s control, however reactions are within one’s control and having the internal capacity to be able to define one’s beliefs, identity, social relations) because of frequent dissonance between previously held conceptions of self, new experiences, reflection, and new learning that can be created as a result (Jones et al., 2005). Baxter Magolda has written extensively about authoring one’s life. Self-authorship, according to Baxtor Magolda (2009a) is in large part, recognizing what happens in the world…

Poetry begs to be spoken; it begs to be heard. The sharing of poetry strengthens connections and brings people together. It builds community. Writing captures all of my attention, like nothing else is able to. I write down whatever makes me feel alive and hope that those words will have the same effect on others.…

Communication can be traced all the way back to when cavemen lived in caves, but along the way, people stopped paying much attention to it. Groups, weather they are business professionals or student learning groups, tend to believe communication is unimportant when working on projects. However, as technology begins to advance, communication has become more difficult to understand and perform. The three concepts of small group communication include, competent communication, primary dimensions of groups, and norming--all which can improve how an individual interacts and why a person communicates. Practicing these concepts will not only guide students or business partners to be open and understanding, but also gain the title of being a competent…

Journal three focuses on my recollection from past hours I volunteered at Debbie’s Angels Productions. After my last journal on “the Little Shop of Horrors,” I discontinued going since I reached my goal of twenty-five hours and had a busy end of the semester schedule. Throughout the whole service learning, I had minimal interaction with the children from the “Aladdin” play; however, some important details came to mind. My service learning at Debbie’s Angels Production connects to the operant conditioning theory, reflects on my personal and educational learning process, and describes on how my knowledge on resilience impacts my service learning.…

I belong to a social group that learns how to write poetry. The social group is a class taught at SPC, with an instructor who orchestrates the learning process: what the students learn; how the students will learn the presented material; how to write poetry; and how to interpret and analyze poems. Each student in the class is a novice when it comes to writing poetry. Because the class is an elective, each student must have had an interest pertaining to poetry, whether it be why poetry is important, or how poetry can enrich someone’s perspective. Indeed, everyone including the professor wants to socialize and learn from others.…

Service-learning projects are opportunities for students to learn through experience and serve their community at the same time. Schools want to encourage students to participate in projects that give back to the community. An on-going book drive would be a valuable service-learning project because it will help the less fortunate, students will be more involved in their community, and it will put old books to good use for the better of the community. For most people living in shelters or low-income neighborhoods and towns, buying reading material is not one of their biggest concerns.…
