Service Learning Reflection Journal Analysis

Service Learning Reflection Journal I had the chance to be a volunteer at Friend’s Place Adult Day Services in McKinney. This is an exceptional day care center for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease of different stages. The place has a warm, family friendly setting allowing members (clients/patients) to feel at home. The facility provides services for the members designed to assist them in their day to day living. It offers care and socialization which includes games, dancing, simple learning activities and live entertainment. I have had several positive experiences with the members. I have made new friends with the center’s owner, the nurse and staffs/directors. As a volunteer, I provided the members with my company, comfort and entertainment.

When I decided to volunteer at the Del Amo Gardens Care Center, I wasn’t quite sure if I was emotionally ready. In March of 2013, my grandpa suffered a very severe stroke. It caused so much damage that it paralyzed half of his body, so we had to put him in a nursing home. Shortly after starting my volunteering, however, any negativity faded away as I was eager to assist with the activities.…

When an employer or college is looking at an applicant’s resume, volunteering experience is a beneficial item to add, especially if it is a related field. Some people are just love to help out the community by volunteering. Many different volunteer programs are appealing to different people, like helping take care of puppies at the animal shelter for animal lovers, caring for a child at a children’s hospital if they are affectionate towards children, or serving a meal at a food kitchen for a chef or someone who is inspired to help the needy. I am called to a different group to volunteer with: the elderly. Each organization helps the elderly in different ways, but my favorite cause is that of Meals on Wheels.…

To see residents in a nursing home enjoying life was quite eye opening. I have to admit I believed the stereotypes that a nursing home was institutional, almost hospital like. However, observing the quality of life the residents were displaying squashed my perceptions of nursing homes. The residents were full of life and very willing to speak with me and reflect on their life changes. Before this experience, I felt a nursing home was a place where the elderly did not have a voice, could not make their own decisions, lost their identity and went to die.…

As each week passes by, another few hours are added to the total for service learning. Though, patience is something that is constantly being tested, it is more of the small interactions that I leave remembering. For this particular visit for this entry, the topic of college arose. With no surprise, the kids that attend each week are curious about who we are, and where we come from; it is only human nature to be inquisitive about people you’ve never met before. Any minor chat about college always begins with discussing graduation year and major, and this was no different.…

In our social justice class, we have learned many lessons that can help us make daily life and society as a whole better. We have learned how to handle real life situations and how some groups are more advantaged than other groups. For this reason, we were assigned to write how we would handle some hypothetical problems and what we learned from our service learning. Doing these problems will show what I have gotten out of the class and what I will bring with me to help the world become a better place in the future.…

When I first arrived, I signed in on the volunteer handbook. During my time at the agency this week, I observed the patients as they were walking around the nursing home. When I walked in, there were a few of the patients watching television and others were in the activity room. As the ladies were getting their nails painted, they informed us volunteer workers how they were going to miss seeing us every Friday. One of the patients expressed why she hates saying goodbye after she’s use to seeing someone.…

I was really grateful for the opportunity to visit the independent living center and learn more about their programs that they offer. It is a program that I have heard of before but didn’t really understand what it was. I thought it was an assistant living home that helps people develop more independent skills, so that they can return to their families at home or live alone. I had a basic understanding of their goal, but I had also a partial false belief of their services that I’m grateful to have corrected. I really enjoyed Debra and Julie taking their time to help us understand their goals and how they themselves have been involved in the independent living movement and the passing of the ADA.…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue. Three words that best describe my service-learning experience would be enlightening, appreciative, inspirational.…
