Service Learning Project Observation Report

Introduction
The experience I encountered during the service learning project was great. Throughout the weeks allocated for the service learning project, I tutored grade two and grade three students from three different schools under two agencies. The names of the agencies are Lion Catcher and MLK Community Center. The project gave me the opportunity to work with little kids for a long time. This also gives me the privilege to help me to work with people who are eager to work and vice versa. The purpose at which the service learning project was assigned to us was fulfilled. One of the purposes is to work with minorities who needs help. In addition, it is also to organize and improve the way we are thinking about supporting client and the use

Also, I made me understand why they need many volunteers to help tutor the kids since education is the top priority of the program. Also, my observation tallied with the problem. It has shaped the way I responded to the situation. They supported my response by making understand why I need to volunteer.
Responding
After considering the situation, I had it in mind to continue volunteering, which serves as my goal. Volunteering helps a lot and it will still help and have an impact in the life of people. I value volunteering a lot and I have been working towards it. The service learning is also a way to help those in need. I intervened by tutoring the kids. For those who are not ready to work, I persuaded them and promise them to take them to the gymnasium so as to play. These really help them because they are happy to play which make them finish their assignment on time.

The project has expanded the way I think about some things. One of the ways this experience shapes my thinking was that, there are different ways to treat a child who don’t want to work without smacking them. In my culture, if a child refuses to do his or her homework, he or she will be punished with either beating, depriving the child from what (s) he likes. Secondly, I made me think of spending more hours in volunteering which may not be tutoring only, but doing other things like help cleaning, or basically helping at the IU Student Outreach Clinic. While volunteering, I make sure I used the communication skills I was taught in class skillfully to have effective communication. Lastly, it made me think of communicating effectively and clearly to bring better results or improvement in the lives of people I work with or converse with. Now, I know communication does a lot of things. Communication alone is a healing method because once a person speaks softly to an individual in need; it calms the person and suits his or her

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

I would first like to start off by expressing how honored I am for being recognized by your organization, as well as overjoyed to have received an invitation to apply for the Johnnie Ruth Clarke Scholarship. I am a focused young man, with a spirit of perseverance, and despite having adversities within my young life, they have not harmed my character, nor the goals that I have on the road towards my future success. I am looking forward with an optimistic mind that I will be so fortunate as to receive this scholarship, it will stand to be a major impact on my journey towards pursuing an active and productive role within society, as well as being a positive role model within my culture. Class Connections: 1. Through volunteering at KinderFrogs, I mainly learned that gender can be such a social construct. Meaning, we as humans either consciously or not, typically adhere to the different gender stereotypes that have been presented to us throughout our lives. While we have discussed this concept in great detail in class, we usually focused on the negative aspects of “socializing gender.” For example, we have talked about how boys feel pressured not to cry or play with dolls, girls feel like they can’t be as good at math, and one’s personal appearance determines what gender they are.…

The ability to smile is one of the first traits we acquire. Unfortunately, my mum lost her smile due to her constant never ending dental problems. It was only when she had a bridge fixed and multiple fillings that she regained her confidence in speaking and smiling. Observing this made me appreciate that a dentist can have a life transforming effect on a person’s life. When searching for a career, dentistry was a clear decision as it is a career which uses practical science while offering the chance to work with people and care for them throughout their lifetime.…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue. Throughout my high school career, I have participated in a number of activities that focused on benefiting the students and community around me. Each activity provided a unique experience that I still carry with me and learn from to this day. As a Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) representative, I have traveled to Massachusetts to discuss racial issues in America with hundreds of other MSAN students across the country. Our goal was to come up with solutions to resolve some of the issues we face in our hometowns.…
