Reflection: Beyond The Ballot

Improved Essays
Our Enc1101 class partnered with the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy to form a service learning project to educate and encourage students at Miami Dade College North Campus to take part in this year’s election. The project was named Beyond the Ballot it was planned as a “speed-dating” party so we could share intimate conversations with the students in a way to not only educate them but to also interact with each other and hear their inputs on the various issues. When I first saw an overview of the service learning project in our syllabus I felt overwhelmed and terrified, I had tremendous doubts that our class may not succeed to complete the project correctly and on time. My uncertainties continued to grow when we had our class …show more content…
During the main event, we had a gigantic red bottle in the middle to serve as our center piece and we also had balloons tied to our chairs. For the activity, my group decided to play “musical bottles” where we used baby bottles and we insert factual strips of information in each bottle that were also stuffed with candies. The goal was to play a song and had one bottle passed around by the students when the song was paused the last person to hold the bottle would be the one to read the information inside the bottle. My partner Stephanie Perez was dressed as a pregnant mother while I was dressed as a pregnant father. We received a lot of attention when our audience sat at our table, many of them seemed confused as to why we were both pregnant. Professor Bucher also commented and asked if we were pregnant. Stephanie and I reassured everyone the reason of our fake pregnancy is to prove that both parents should stay home to care for their newborns. We covered the two candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump stance into how they plan to offer paid maternity leaves and how they are going to fund it. Michidael and Ana discussed to the students about affirmative action and the wage difference. Many of the male participants saw the imbalance of gender equality in the workforce. One male participant said “I do feel that it is not fair that women are being paid less than a male.” My group member’s presentation seemed slightly biased because it was difficult to find Donald Trump stance on the issues. Whereas, Hillary Clinton website provided us enough information on the issues we had. Beyond the Ballot service learning project surpassed the scope of a regular English class because it was an exciting way to learn instead of the dull thick textbooks literature. Beyond the Ballot allowed the entire class to work successfully together to intertwined fun and learning. I believe

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

In the early 1900s, in the eyes of many, women were considered unequal to men. Many men did not believe women deserved to have power or rights. Many men believed that they were the superior gender and even considered women as unintelligent. In Susan Glasspell’s story, “A Jury of Her Peers,” the author shows the audience just how unfairly women were treated during this time period in history. Glasspell, however, does an incredible job at using this story to portray that women are just as capable at doing anything a man can do, and maybe even better sometimes.…

To say one is a democrat, is often an action without thought, but when said thought is applied, whether or not one are a democrat becomes a question much easier asked than answered; there is a great deal of thought that must go in to giving that question an educated response. Kristen Ross goes against the societal grain, and expresses that for various reasons she is not. Her essay gives a well research explanation as to why she feels such a way, providing the reader with valuable insight on her uncommon opinion. The value of voting, a modern day staple in any democracy, is criticized for its purpose. It is pointless to ask the opinion of the people only to tell them that they have given the wrong answer and must revote.…

My objective is to own more valuable property and possesses more cash than any other citizen in the country (HL District). Currently, I am far away from accomplishing my objective as we are still in year 3 (2002) and I have a total of only $229 due to the prices of resources taxes and rent. However, since I have made an Insurance hex that will be operational in 2003 I strongly believe that I will make tons of money and will be able to accomplish my objective in the next few years.…

On May 20, 2016, my adviser and I sat down to have a discussion about the university required courses and courses that was mandatory for the Liberal Arts college. English 101 was one of the classes I chose to take my first semester because I knew I had more knowledge on writing efficient papers because of my previous AP English courses in high school. In high school, I was always told that I was an adequate writer because I knew the basic of connecting ideas that provided a clear concrete understanding. However, the only time I received an unsatisfactory score was when the information I included in my paper was unorganized. Also, another reason I chose to take English my first semester instead of my second semester was because I knew I needed…

Journal Reflection of the Sexual Assault Seminar This service learning project had a unique start since the class voted on the most popular topic which was determined to be a physical fitness activity at a local elementary school to combat obesity. However, a classmate mentioned a current issue on campus and his concern of the awareness of sexual assault and its implications. This concern grew into a proposal to conduct a campus-wide seminar to discuss sexual assault in order to increase awareness. This idea and the groups’ vision led to a large scale campaign to combat sexual assault by disseminating a message of “No More”, which is a mantra that denies any acceptance of an act that could led to or suggests sexual assault.…

Much like my experience at the Foundation Communities Health Fair, I volunteered to register folks to vote while also discussing the need to protect reproductive services for women in Texas. Volunteering at the Legislate THIS: Election Edition! burlesque show was quite interesting because I had never been to one and it was a chance to engage with people about the importance of being involved in women’s health issues. In an effort to bring more awareness and support to this event, I advertised the event among my friends and on my social media. I stated the importance of women’s reproductive rights and explained that all the proceeds of Legislate THIS: Election Edition!…

In reflection of my experiences in the gator study group that examined voting rights I found myself questioning a lot of previous ideas I held. While this was my third time being in a gator group that discussed the brilliant speakers the center for political participation brought in, this was the semester where I learned the most in my group. Seeing I had taken a class that spend almost half a semester focusing of voting rights this was a topic I was previously knowledgeable on making the topics being discussed more interesting. Between the speakers, the critical/analytical group I was in, and my previous understanding I gained the most form this semester’s group. My favorite speaker was Senator Jeff Smith.…
