This allows me to achieve the aforementioned goals, as I am able to affects kids’ education, and hopefully leave a positive impact on it. In addition, tutoring allows me to experience something I have not ever tried before, and yet I have had many people teach me. It is almost a responsibility to all of the teachers that have spent their time to educate me for me to spread my acquired knowledge to other kids. I chose to tutor at Central Middle because they are at the heart of the community, and with a program already set up for tutors, I am able to reach and work with as many students as possible. As I would be participating in an already established program, I am indebted to the coordinator of tutors at Central Middle and also the other experienced tutors who would give me assignments and teach me the basics of tutoring others. This program runs for 2 hours on every Tuesday and Thursday after school ends, and is convenient as I could just walk from South River to Central Middle. For me to complete the project requirements, I need to attend three sessions, and anytime I am free I can conveniently attend. …show more content…

This paper will be a summary about the service learning experience that I had the opportunity to have throughout the course of the semester. The classes that I observed are a ninth grade English Honors class, and an eleventh grade AP English class, at Cerritos High School. Even though the students from those two classes belong to different age ranges, both groups have shown to have about the same needs, and they are both formed (for the majority) of ESL learners. The difference between the two classes was found in the curriculum goals or in the books used. Moreover, the way in which both of the class curriculums are developed is also similar, the reason for which can be found in the fact that the English Honor and AP English classes are held…

Both experiences have affected me because it has changed the way I see the world around me and given me new insight on what is going on in my own community. I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of the issues occurring around me, but after going to these events and listening to the class lecture, I have found there is a lot for me to learn from to have a greater understanding of what is going on around me. Because of this Service-L Learning course, I learned I need to be open-minded about the impact individuals, such as myself, have on the community, so I can better help the individuals in my community. This experience was different than what I expected because I expected to be volunteering at one certain area for the whole 20 hours. After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue.
