For my service learning project, I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Gregg County, which is one of the centers that had merged with the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines in Marshall (Cromer, 2016). The mission statement of the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines is “To empower the kids of East Texas to be great” (About the Club, 2016). In addition to this statement, the organization as a whole seeks “To inspire and equip all young people, especially those that need us most, to achieve their full potential as healthy, productive, responsible caring citizens” (About the Club, 2016). Service Learning is an act of portraying goodness, as described in the the article "What We Don't Talk About When We Don't Talk About Service Learning". Giving back to the community, is showing an act of kindness for others whom might clearly deserve it in a time of need or just as well as to those who merely expected it. Through these good actions, whatever the cause may be, a chain reaction could be started. Maybe not everyone shows their gratitude by giving back what they received, for example lending a helping hand, but one way or another they react upon this gesture in an appreciative manner. Having such young souls participate in wonderful causes such as shelter homes, hospitals, and schools to name a few locations is a wonderful…

The most challenging part of this Service Learning Activity was working with people who were not English majors or poets. Although the Mass Communications students were amazing, they did not know much about poetry.…

Secondly, I didn’t have to travel anywhere. This meant I saved time and gas money from not having to travel to some location in order to complete my service learning.…

Service learning is the cross roads of volunteer work in the community and the classroom; it is serving with a purpose and being reflective about the process and impacts on the community. This service learning opportunity is especially beneficial for future teachers like myself since it helps to build community relations, it shows students active and caring adulating in the education field and helps developing teachers apply skills to the real world. In fact, Eyler & Giles (1999) in their research have found evidence that one of the major benefits of service learning is the applied problem solving, critical thinking, and real world experience for the students while they are still being mentored in school. I believe that future educators, myself included, can profit from more service learning opportunities that place us in classrooms to become more acquainted with the issues students have today and to develop our own identity in the classroom. I learned more about patience and the skills of teaching verse knowing a subject during my time at St. Peter High School and I am sure other potential teachers would find their own areas for improvement since we are all life-long…

For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue. Three words that best describe my service-learning experience would be enlightening, appreciative, inspirational.…
