Service Learning In Nursing

Service learning is to learn from volunteerism and training during that volunteer time, as nurses our education is based highly on the good will towards men, women, and children. There are hundreds of areas in which nurses can volunteer and learn from their experiences, the end goal which is that of growth and development in order to better serve our clients. Today nursing faces a variety of issues in which there is always room to grow, mostly these areas include serving those with cultural diversity and social disparities. Service learning is possible at the flu shot clinic, however a person has more room for growth when volunteering at the homeless shelter or the veteran’s home.

In the article “Development of Leadership Behaviors in Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Service Learning Approach,” it stated that service learning has been viewed as an effective and efficient mechanism that combines peer leadership, community involvement, and social change projects. (Foli, Braswell, Kilpatrick, & Lim, 2014, p. 77) The students were given a pre-test and a post-test during their service learning project in which they could self-evaluate how they grew and their own leadership skills, the test also offered them the chance to evaluate one another. “Overall, the students rated themselves as gaining in leadership behaviors and the overall scores were significantly correlated with their peers’ observations.” (Foli et al., 2014, p. 81) In essays after the project students communicated that they had increased ability to effectively delegate and to trust team members, they refined the process of professional communication, and had the ability to step-up when they were not asked to.
