Freshman Orientation 102 is a course on service learning. I thought it would be like Freshman Orientation 101 where we would learn more history about Alabama A&M University, but both classes are very different. This semester I have learned how important it is for an individual to give back to their community. I learned the meaning of service learning. Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Service learning is a process of involving students in community service activities combined with facilitated means for applying the experience to their academic and personal …show more content…
I can protect the brand of my school by continuing to be a valuable asset. I can continue to be a valuable asset by continuing to show outsiders that students of Alabama A&M University are smart, responsible, and good citizens.
During this course, I have learned that is it important to respect everyone regardless if you know them or not. However, I do not believe that respect should be demanded. I believe respect should be earned. This is because people take respect for granted. They feel that if it was given to them really easy, then nothing they do can have it taken

Responsible people can be trusted, and this benefits both the person and the community counting on the responsible person. Responsible people also earn a well-deserved positive sense of self-esteem. Responsible people usually get farther in life, because business leaders prefer to promote people who can work without constant supervision. The hardest part is taking responsibility if something goes wrong but, even then, people respect a person who owns up to making a mistake and works to fix it. It is important to be responsible because responsibility is a sign of having good character. Having good character leads to being a good citizen. To be a good citizen anywhere you have to be a good person. That means showing respect, having a good attitude or just helping out. In the classroom, you have to show responsibility by doing your homework on time, or listening and following directions. Also, you have to help out your other classmates. Being a good citizen is important on and off campus as well. You want to make sure that when you leave college that you remain a good person in order to continue giving your school a good name. Citizenship begins with obeying laws and getting involved in community affairs. Responsible citizens do things like volunteering and protecting the environment. Demonstrating good citizenship is being an individual who is involved in trying to make the community, nation, or world a better place.

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

Scot Hafer Mrs. Rue 10-8-15 Good citizen essay Understanding and Adapting People can't always get what they wants. No one can ever always get what they one in this world. Just like a society won't be able to get perfect expectations out of the people in it. A good citizen is a person who fights for racial equality and has respect for a persons culture or beliefs by giving people a place in society or by giving other races a chance in a society because if one person in a society didn't obey the law or let other races be equal to each other; then they would set bad examples to other citizens, and some people in that society might follow which would give the lawmakers and people who…

I choose to speak to Mrs. Williams for my first service learning paper. She is retired, married, and a mother of two children. At age 11 she started work on a plantation to help earn money for her family, after her father’s sudden death. Working at such a young age prevented her from receiving an education. She feels ashamed for not being able to read or write, which kept her from building friendships because she did not want anyone to know of lack of education.…

In our social justice class, we have learned many lessons that can help us make daily life and society as a whole better. We have learned how to handle real life situations and how some groups are more advantaged than other groups. For this reason, we were assigned to write how we would handle some hypothetical problems and what we learned from our service learning. Doing these problems will show what I have gotten out of the class and what I will bring with me to help the world become a better place in the future.…

Starting my service learning experience was difficult at first but after planning and figuring out what I wanted to achieve from it, it became easier to accomplish. In the beginning of planning my SLE I knew that I wanted to help donate to a big organization. I repeatedly told myself “the smallest action can make a huge change”. It was a challenge to figure out where I was going to get the money from in order to donate. That was until I meet Ivonne Farfan, the owner of “RENTMEUSA”.…

Both experiences have affected me because it has changed the way I see the world around me and given me new insight on what is going on in my own community. I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of the issues occurring around me, but after going to these events and listening to the class lecture, I have found there is a lot for me to learn from to have a greater understanding of what is going on around me. Because of this Service-L Learning course, I learned I need to be open-minded about the impact individuals, such as myself, have on the community, so I can better help the individuals in my community. This experience was different than what I expected because I expected to be volunteering at one certain area for the whole 20 hours. I did not expect to take part of what the community events, but I am glad I did because it has opened…

Equality is something this world has been striving for since the beginning of mankind. There has been many rallies and debates over this. People should treat other people with respect because if not you will come off as being an egotistical person and creating a bad name as yourself. Respect should be given as a must because you want to give as much respect as you wish to receive in return. For example, my theatre teacher ,Mr.Garcia, demands respect since he will give you as much respect as you give him.…

Often while growing up, we are taught to be good people, to have good morals, and to do others what we would want to have done to ourselves. However, being a good citizen is not stressed nearly as much as being a good person, yet both ideas go hand and hand. The quote "it is impossible to be a good person and not a good citizen" as said by the late University of Arkansas professor Diane Blair, although simple, has a deep meaning. To me, the quote means living the morals I was taught about being a good person while growing up. Having these morals as a young adult and continuing to exercise them today is natural to me, and it follows just as naturally that as I have begun to participate in my community, I am just as naturally contributing, to the community.…
