In my service learning, I grew an understanding on the upstream factors in health that effect how healthcare should be provided for different group of people. Medication and surgery are the basic ways of treating symptoms, but an upstream approach is needed. Without treating the core root that is causing the health issue, medications are simply being prescribed with no real effect. Understanding and attempting to address a patient’s diet, exercise, living conditions, and social factors must be a part of treating the overall patient, because in the end of the day the patient is a human and not just a patient who needs medication.
