The Service Learning has been held at Benton Hall Academy is a private school in Franklin, TN. According to the school website, it's an Elementary, Middle and High school. 70 students from grades 3 to 12 attend Benton Hall School and identify as White, non-Hispanic; Black, non-Hispanic; and Hispanic.
The type of classroom that the observation has taken place is a high school, the students are seniors and joiners that have been diagnosed with learning disabilities and physical problems. The classroom includes 20 students between males and females in each period, students ages are 15- 17 years old. The student-student behavior mainly excellent, they get on very well together.
There are five questions that I would like to ask to find out an answer for them in the second reflection paper when the process of observation goes on. I hope that the teacher’s responses on the interview and his method of teaching, information can be beneficial to answer all of my questions. The questions are as the following:
How different is the special education classroom to the general education classroom?
What type of physical disabilities do the students have?
Do all the students have the same special education needs?
What kind of learning disabilities they have?
How can the teacher help to improve the students’ learning skills and get them make higher grades?
My perception to students with disabilities are not different in learning to the public school students if they get the successful environment of education. Using teaching aids is important for special education students, as the students use computers to look up information and take note from a reading text that helps the students improve their writings and spelling. There is a study discussed the issue of Middle School students with LD approach online note taking result was to encourage teachers to enable the students to type or write down their notes in order improve their writing skills and know their mistakes instead of copy and paste.
