Service Learning Assignment

Going in to this service learning assignment I thought I knew what to expect. I knew most of the people I was working with, many of the children, and how things operated. When the church went through its recent merge however the nursery got turned topsy turvy and I found myself learning a lot more than I thought I would. When combining new people and new ideas there are bound to be hiccups along the way. I thought I would be a pro because I had done it for years (6 years to be exact). A few things that were different than I expected was that the presence of the nursery coordinator. Our coordinator also changed when the church changed locations and while she is an amazing woman she tends to micro-manage the volunteer workers. I think it’s wonderful that she volunteers her time and efforts but I find the atmosphere a bit more claustrophobic when she is always there watching your every move. The environment is also different than I expected. I was used to more space per child when we were at our other location. I understand that soon they are going to do some expansion (which I think is marvelous) and this should remedy many of our …show more content…
The sanitation and cleaning process is not particularly practical or efficient. It takes up too much time and many times things get sanitized more than once in the confusion of the process. Personally I think we need to come up with a different strategy. Working in the church nursery is truly a ministry. The community needs to give mothers more opportunities to rejuvenate but there are actually very few places they can do this. Most places women go do not cater to mothers (unless they’re IKEA). The church is coming forward and offering a safe place for mothers and their children to be secure. I think this is terribly important as many women don’t get this opportunity or they have to pay through the nose to get

For my service-learning project I volunteered at Holston Health and Rehabilitation Center. Holston is a place for senior citizens to come when they are either too old to care for themselves at home or are recovering from surgery. I do many things when I volunteer there. I can help with anything from decorating, printing, organizing, or cleaning.…

Integrating into the agency has been both a positive and at times a bit overwhelming. On both a professional and personal level it has made me more aware and conscious of my personal feelings and how this impacts on practice. Being aware of my own biases and prejudices will allow me to self-reflect to be able to make improved professional ethical decisions. Being familiar with Barnardos policies which includes safety when attending house visits by documenting where we are going in our work calendar and always letting reception know where we are, client confidentiality and exchange of information has made my learning experience at Barnardos beneficial for future practice. I always feel great about volunteering. One of my favorite memories is when on of the moms used to always thank me for watching her little son Elijah. She was so kind to me, she did not have to be kind. She was going through a lot, and she took her time to be kind and have conversations with me. I have not seen her for a long time, but I remember her appreciation.…

Journal 2 This week I was able to do a small site visit when I turned in my paperwork. Unfortunately, I was not able to see where they kept the children because my background check and other important information had not yet been processed, but I was still able to get a good idea of what volunteering at the St. Louis Crisis Nursery will be like. When I first pulled up, I was very surprised at the building the nursery was in. I was expecting a fun environment which would be filled with toys scattered around in the grass and playground equipment. However, the building was old and the neighborhood was not in a better part of town which surprised me.…

Introduction For my service learning experience, I decided to continue my long-term volunteer position at Palmetto Place Children’s shelter. I also participated in the Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence. With Palmetto Place being on the micro level, and the walk being on the macro level, I was able to broaden my experience level. Through volunteering at Palmetto Place, I was able to expand my cultural competence for children in foster care, practice skills such as empathetic responding, connect my experience to the NASW Code of Ethics, and contribute to the mission statement of the organization.…

In the nursing field there are over 100 areas to specialize in. This large quantity of options makes it difficult for a young adult to know what he or she would like to specialize in and work with. There are two major ways to explore and find out where one’s calling may be, clinical experience and shadowing. The shadow opportunity was very enlightening. I was able to learn about a new floor of medicine I was not very familiar with; while shadowing a nationally recognized award winning nurse.…
