Both experiences have affected me because it has changed the way I see the world around me and given me new insight on what is going on in my own community. I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of the issues occurring around me, but after going to these events and listening to the class lecture, I have found there is a lot for me to learn from to have a greater understanding of what is going on around me. Because of this Service-L Learning course, I learned I need to be open-minded about the impact individuals, such as myself, have on the community, so I can better help the individuals in my community. This experience was different than what I expected because I expected to be volunteering at one certain area for the whole 20 hours. I did not expect to take part of what the community events, but I am glad I did because it has opened …show more content…
At times, there were a lot of events where I could attend, but it always interfered with my classes, which really upset me. If it was not because of my classes, then it was because of work. The positive part from my experience was that I was not expected to volunteer at one place. I had options of going to different service learning opportunities. The drawback of my volunteer experience was I felt I should have done more research on the organizations I was volunteering for so I can have a better perception of what their goals and mission are. The main thing I learned from this Service-Learning class was about the organization; I had no idea they existed prior to enrolling in the class. Now I can benefit from this because I can use this organization as a resource for my future clients. I do feel I made a difference, but I did not act alone because I was part of a larger group and together we rallied to make our community a better place to live. From these two Service-Learning experiences, I influenced immigrants and people who are Muslims who are in my community and in

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

Doing this service learning project made me feel that I was back in high school. I decided to do this project for four main reasons: I didn't want to do the research paper, I wanted to return the help that I received from my ESL teacher when I was in PHS, I wanted to do something productive with the time that I had available between my classes, and lastly I needed some money. Overall, I wasn't expecting to see so much difference between the standard, and intensive class, but there was a huge difference among these two classes. My first day of doing service…

Going in to this service learning assignment I thought I knew what to expect. I knew most of the people I was working with, many of the children, and how things operated. When the church went through its recent merge however the nursery got turned topsy turvy and I found myself learning a lot more than I thought I would. When combining new people and new ideas there are bound to be hiccups along the way. I thought I would be a pro because I had done it for years (6 years to be exact).…

Reflective Essay It started off on a wednesday afternoon when my cousin had told me about this club called latinos unidos. When my cousin told me about this club I generally thought that it would be just a bunch of nonsense work for the greater good. I chose the place I volunteered at because I couldn't find anything else at the moment. This was my first time volunteering…

In general, I enjoy going to service learning. Being involved in service learning has made me feel like I held more capital within the confines of my social space; a rather empowering feeling. While I’m there, my state of mind is not limited to this feeling of self-worth as I find myself more focused on engaging with the kids and being what I deem a good role model. It is during these reflections that I find myself believing I am actually a better person for attending. I attribute this to my improvements when interacting with the younger kids and being able to prevent conflict.…

For my service learning project, since I am a non-practicing religious person I chose to seek out an individual who is religious and discuss some of our similarities and differences. I chose this particular project because I often find myself confiding in one of my religious friends, about different aspects in my life and I feel that she provides me with appropriate advice often from a religious standpoint. In order to fulfill the requirements of this project, I invited my friend to lunch during this past week and explained to her my objective for this project, which by the way she fully understood and had no question about helping me. Kaye and I have become close friends over the past year and a half, we basically spend most of our day together…
