Service Animals In Facilities: A Case Study

Decent Essays
How do we know if service animals are allowed in facilities? According to the ADA, both state, local governments and facilities that serve the general public must allow service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all areas in which individuals without disabilities would go. The perfect example to this rule would be denying accommodations to lodge because the guest has an animal that is assisting them. A case that reflects this situation is: Plaintiff United States of America and Defendant Sairam Enterprises, Inc., LLC a/k/a Sairam Enterprises, Inc. (“Sairam Enterprises”) d/b/a Days Inn and Conference Center Tulsa a/k/a Tuscany Inn (“Days Inn Tulsa” or “Hotel” (ADA, n.d.). Plaintiff, Mr. Crockett, was refused lodging accommodations

The company I evaluated is Pets Plus, which is a local pet company that sells products, offers animal care, and even adoption options. Pets are often used to evoke ethos from an audience. As a pet store, the store is affiliated with the assumption that the audience cares about the well-being of one's pet. When visiting this company's website, the first thing I noticed was the wide use of images. Everything that I clicked on the page led to adorable images of various types of pets.…

In this article, written by David Leonhardt, the issue of pet owners pretending to own service animals when flying on airplanes, is discussed. According to this article it all started when, “a 1986 law forbidding discrimination against handicapped air travelers made sure that physically disabled people could travel with service animals”. This is partly because many airlines do not require proof of medical need, in order for a passenger to fly with a service animal. Therefore, by claiming their family pets as service animals, “people could bring an animal on board without putting it in a carry-on bag…
