Service Academy Personal Statement

Throughout my entire life I have been called to serve something that is truly greater than myself, and I have always desired to serve my country. This summer, I attended the Air Force Academy Summer Seminar, where I experienced cadet life firsthand. I was able to live on campus for a week, meet cadets, and participate in academic classes. While at summer seminar, I felt a sense of service and sacrifice that I have never felt before. Because of my experience at summer seminar, I know that I want to attend a service academy and serve my country more than anything else. My leadership skills, life experiences and values will make me successful at a service academy.

I have experienced several hardships throughout my life, and they have only made me stronger. I believe that everyone experiences hardships, but I think that it is how one responds to these hardships that matter most. On July 21, 2014, I was involved in a serious car accident that left me unable to walk for two months. A man ran a red light and hit my car, changing my outlook on life forever. I broke my pelvis and rib, and suffered a severe concussion. This all happened less than a month before the start of my junior year of high school. Before my accident, I had never known what it was like to be disabled, physically or mentally. Everyday activities became extremely difficult for me. I could not participate in the sports that I loved, and simple thinking became challenging. Although most people would have expected me to become uninvolved and receive lower grades, the result was completely opposite. Despite the fact that I was taking a very rigorous class schedule, including four Advance Placement classes, I still managed to keep my 4.0 GPA, and am now ranked second in my class of 413.
