Service dogs are dogs trained to help wounded veterans, whether they have PTSD, a visible injury like a missing limb, or an invisible one like a fractured vertebrae. Most dogs know about 100 commands and some others know even more. They can pick things up, turn lights on and off, assist with balance, and help the veteran with other everyday tasks. They can help calm the veteran if they are anxious and they can form a barrier against crowds so that the veteran won’t get overwhelmed. Sometimes even just the mere presence and company of a dog will soothe someone and ease their stress or anxiety. PTSD service dogs can provide a sense of security and help with depression, they can sense the veteran’s moods and even help heal emotional wounds. Service dogs are trained since they were puppies about eight weeks old, and are traditionally better behaved than pet dogs. Service dogs also receive more public access. Pet dogs cannot enter a restaurant or store -with the exception of pet stores- no matter how well behaved the dogs are. However, a badly behaved service dog can be made to leave. Also, certain pet dogs wouldn't make suitable service dogs and wouldn’t meet all the qualifications if they were trained like a service dog. The stereotypical service dogs are Retrievers and Labradors, but almost any breed can become a service dog if they have the skills, willingness, and correct attitude.
