Serve Or Fail Summary
Dave Eggers’ story talks about the benefits of doing public service and the downside of it. As said in his story many students have a little bit too much of free time during their college days, sometimes it goes up to four days, especially with athletes who don't do much but train all four years like Eggers. “In 14 states, a bill was passed that required 90,000 students perform 25 hours of community serves’’ to help out the community and to probably get their asses of their couch. In the story Eggers mainly supports the idea of students working or helping the community because it helps them understand the way of life.
Students in colleges should have a part time job and help the community so that they will learn some value lessons. The majority of the students in colleges get full schedules during their first 2 years spend hours of studying but they still get a lot of free time. Many would use that time for sports, studying more or playing video games all day, the people that play video games loss a lot of value time and they learn nothing. It is a good reason to go out and help the community with working or helping the elder ligue, from where they can learn a value lesson and could earn a bit of cash for themselves or help pay their bills in college like books because books are expensive.

Despite of many students having free time not all have that time because they have hard classes in which they have to spend hours of studying, but still have some free time. It should be the student's choice to work but the college should at least give some kind of credits for the people who can and work for a certain amount of hours. Credits that could help students with graduating college or use them for payments like when someone gets college credits in high school and use them to save themselves for

In the source, The Community Is Their Textbook: Maryland's Experiment with Mandatory Service for Students, by Suzanne Goldsmith, the question of whether or not community service should be required for graduation is examined. A third area that funding is being directed to is athletic facilities and coaches’ salaries. Money is often spent on new practice facilities and locker rooms so that colleges can increase recruiting efforts. When colleges are able to acquire good players for their athletic teams they can increase revenue generated at the games. The problem is that the revenue generated doesn’t go back into the university’s system to fund education. The money instead goes to coaches’ salaries and bonuses along with new team facilities.…

In his article, “Serve or Fail,” Dave Eggers, a well-known editor and author, tries to resolve a perplexing social dilemma: Under what circumstances is it acceptable for students to dedicate the entirety of their 4 years of college experience completing and excelling in their school work without a proposed break of some sort to help replenish their minds, bodies, and souls? In addition, he suggests that we should not only minimize the school year by a year, but incorporate community service into the school system. His view towards this situation are justified throughout this composition by his use of effective logos, ethos, and pathos. Eggers has a valid proposal towards his audience, but he fails to elaborate on more solutions to further…

I view college as a way to flourish one's education level, leading to a better job. Though I concede that some people go to college for the manifestation, I still maintain that college helps mold and teach students to prepare for jobs. For example, in Perry's (2015) article, he states that "College is not all about academic, it is to meet new people and make new memories" (para. 14). This demonstrates that there is an intrinsic reason for attending college. Although some may object that going to college for fun is a waste of money, I would reply that you can have fun and learn throughout one's educational career.…
