Analysis Of Lead Like Jesus Revisited By Robert Greenleaf

As we reflect on Robert Greenleaf's book, Servant Leadership, Greenleaf asserts that "it begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve" (Greenleaf, 1977, p.27), and that servant leadership begins with the person. Negatively, the rewards of money, recognition, power, as well as pride and fear can create a leadership style that reflects "it's all about me " (Blanchard, Hodges, Hendry, 2016, p. 1). In the book Lead Like Jesus Revisited, the authors suggest that leadership is "a journey that begins with your transformation" (Blanchard, et al., 2016, p. 2). Jesus taught that "whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted" (Matthew 23:12). "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is a well spring of life" (Proverbs 4:23). The heart is the motivation and intent of leading (Blanchard, Hodges, 2003), out of self-interest or to benefit others (Blanchard, et al., 2016)? " Life is about what you give, rather than what you get" (Blanchard, Hodges, 2003, p. 22-23) The head is the where the leader's belief system resides (Blanchard, Hodges, 2003). There are two roles of the servant leader; visionary role and implementation role (Servant Leader, 2016). "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind"(Romans 12:2). The head needs to know the purpose. "You show what is in your heart and head in what you do with your hands: your motivation and beliefs about leadership affect your actions" (Blanchard, Hodges, 2003, p.37). Actions, in turn, become habits. By spending time in solitude, prayer, the study of God's Word, the application of Scripture and having supporting relationships follows the habits and patterns of Jesus (Blanchard, et al.,

In previous assignments, I distinguished between authentic and servant leadership approaches. Authentic leadership focuses on qualities that help leaders to be perceived as trustworthy and believable by their followers (Northouse, 2012). One of the many strengths of authentic leadership is that it fulfills a need for trustworthy leadership (Northouse, 2012). According to Northouse (2012), servant leaders put followers first, empower them, and help them develop their full personal capacity. Servant leaders build strong relationships with others by giving followers the support they need, involving them in decisions, and building a sense of…

However, for over the last six decades, one the most influential authors for the terminology and study of servant leadership, is a man that goes by the name of Robert K. Greenleaf. In his studies, Robert K. Greenleaf describes servant leadership as a type of leader that serves others, rather than the followers serving the leader. Doing so will have the followers achieve and improve. As any leader, they are responsible for the followers and those that are not on the same level as others. The people served grow as individuals, becoming 'healthier, wiser, more autonomous and more likely themselves to become servants' (Greenleaf, 1977).…

Douglas Fagerstrom has it right when he states in his book, “The ministry staff member,” “You only have one chance to make a first impression, often an impression is the mold to which others will conform.” As staff members it is imperative that our performance is at a standard worthy of following. Paul in 1 Corinthians encouraged believers to “follow my example, as I follow Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1 NIV). Our goal should be clear.…

Leadership styles include democratic, autocratic, laissez-faire as well as servant leadership. Of the varied styles, servant leadership is the most appealing and interesting to study as it draws attention to the servant leader, “as one who is a servant first” (Greenleaf, 1977). Likewise, Spears and Lawrence (2002) have suggested that at its core, servant leadership is a long-term, transformational approach to life and work (p. 4). Over the years, many leaders have emerged and because of their actions, performance, and traits they are hailed as servant leaders. This includes, but is not limited to: Pope Francis, also known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Baker, Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, and W.E.B. Du Bois.…

The text, Servant Leadership, by Robert K. Greenleaf, is a fascinating book that outlines the aspects of a true leader. In relation to my summer internship at Fortress Bank, formerly known as First State Bank of Illinois, I took on the roll of a leader. More importantly, I took on the roll of a servant leader as I become a team player that was a vital cog in the running of the company. Throughout this essay, I will compare and relate the aforementioned text to my summer experience. I enjoyed the author’s dialogue regarding community as I felt that it was comparable to Fortress Bank’s recent rebranding.…

The Servant by James C. Hunter provides a foundation and an understanding of true leadership. Through the lives of John Daily and five other struggling leaders on a retreat, Hunter uses Brother Simeon to explain the principles of servant leadership, which causes John and the others to reflect deeply on their character, trust, and commitment. Creating and deepening the principles described by Brother Simeon will enhance one’s leadership perspective and will prove to be beneficial for a school principal. “Leadership is the skill of influencing people to work enthusiastically toward goals identified as being for the common good” (Hunter, 2012, p 28). To influence people, you must build authority, which is done when you identify and meet the…

There are countless of theories we have discussed, but only three resonated with who I am as a person and are the foundation of my leadership style; servant leadership, situational leadership, and path-goal leadership. Servant leadership according to Greenleaf (1970, 1972, 1977) focuses on the leaders being attentive to the follower’s needs/concerns, empathizing with followers, and nurturing them. In this concept, leaders put followers first and help them develop personally and professionally. Komives (2011) believes Greenleaf’s vision of a servant leader can lead to leaders’ exhibition of authenticity, integrity, and trustworthiness. This concept was evident to me due to the time spent as a Board member of Human Relations Leadership Association at Montclair State University.…

The Link Between Transformational and Servant Leadership To lead, or not to lead - To serve, or not to serve? These are the questions that vex the mindset of a leader and a servant. Van Dierendonck, Stam Boerma, Windt, and Alkema (2013) emphasized the considerable overlap between servant leadership and transformational leadership styles. Servant and transformational leadership are more influential than transactional or laissez-faire leadership styles. The focal point of this paper is how two type of leadership styles such as servant and transformational, can share similarities in their characteristics, but also differ in the components and proceedings; but gain the same results.…

This scripture reminds leaders that they can sharpen their skills and abilities with others. During critical times, a leader’s character and ability to effectively lead will be tested. The outcome of these situations will either sharpen the skill set of the leader as iron is sharpened by other iron, or the leader will lose the trust of followers due to his or her demonstrated ineffectiveness. Leaders must prepare themselves for the contact sport of leadership and exhibit unwavering character as they manage situations and strive to be change agents in the modern business world. It is crucial for individuals who seek a leadership position to understand that everything will not operate as planned.…
