Servant Leadership and Its Application to Nursing Servant leadership is a style of leadership that serves those who follow the leader, this type of leadership puts employees first, not the managers. The servant leader has many qualities and characteristics that separate these leaders from others. Some qualities of a servant leader are that they act with humility, are honest, selfless, encouraging, patient, and are forgiving (Hunter, 1998). This type of leadership does not seek power, yet is followed willingly because of their personal influence. Servant leadership will not force one to do anything; yet will have the person willingly follow them.
Characteristics
A servant leader will encourage their employees to continue to grow, to develop as a person and a professional. Theses types of leaders will also encourage good behavior by showing appreciation and by giving their employees attention, they will also lead by example (Hunter, 1998). Before this book, I was not sure what makes a great leader. After reading The Servant, it has given me a little bit of insight what it could take to be a great leader, and I am not sure that I have all of those qualities. To me, I think it takes a little more than what The Servant has to offer for leadership, but the author does make a few great points. Like being humble, kind, forgiving and encouraging were a few personal favorites of mine. The Servant has given me ideas on how to be a better leader and employee. It has made me realize to not look for something out of everyday transactions, to forgive others and to try to keep my cool and not be judgmental in certain situations. I have now realized that to be a great leader, it is better to have those follow you with their own free will rather than just doing what they are
