At the beginning of an officer’s career there is usually a question that is asked that is related to why you would like to be an officer. Historically the answer is that they want to help people and serve their respective community. As you progress through the ranks and assume leadership roles, you quickly realize that your role is no longer to serve the members of the community; it is to also serve those that work directly for you. It is this realization that has directed me to a servant leadership philosophy that I utilize both outside of the organization as well as inside the organization. To continue the legacy of outstanding service that my predecessor has created I will lead by encouraging creativity on the parts of the officers to develop new initiatives that will better connect them to the community. Their past experiences will assist with making decisions related to community service programs. Secondly, I intend to cultivate a culture of trust within the department so that creativity and motivation remains high. Next, I intend to develop the informal leaders that were identified during the transitional period. These leaders, when developed, can bring much needed creativity to the citizens of Coralville in the form of community service related initiatives. I also intend to think long term as it relates to community service programs and collaborative activities between city divisions. Having a long term plan in place for programs assists with obtaining the buy in required to assure continued success moving forward.
