Serratia Marcescens: Streptomycin

Serratia marcescens is one of many species that have been shown to cause infection even though it was once considered as non-pathogenic. Therefore, it is crucial that we find an effective method of controlling these bacteria. Previous studies have already shown that aminoglycosides such as Streptomycin are effective against S. marcescens, but it is also necessary to administer the antibiotic at certain concentrations for minimizing bacterial growth. In this experiment, we attempted to find a correlation between the susceptibility of Serratia marcescens to concentrations of Streptomycin. Using the disc diffusion method to find the diameter of the zone of inhibition for each concentration, we found that the diameter increases as the concentration increases up to around 50 mg/mL, after which the results almost stay constant. As a biological marker, it helped improve researchers’ understanding of the development of infections (Yang et al. 2012). However, in-depth research of this species has shown that S. marcescens is associated with numerous diseases, including respiratory tract infections and meningitis (Hejazi and Falkiner 1997). However, aminoglycosides have proven to be very effective against Serratia and are still being tested for potency towards other bacteria.

Streptomycin has monumental effects on gram-negative bacteria, especially Serratia. The aminoglycoside inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis during the translation step (Hester et al. 2016). In addition, streptomycin has similar properties to beta-lactam antibiotics such that it can modify the permeability of the bacteria’s wall itself, allowing faster diffusion across the membrane (Davis
