Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT), similarly to previously described epinephrine, norepinehrine and dopamine, is a monoamine neurotransmitter. Its chemical structure is presented in Figure 44. Serotonin is primarly found in the enetrochromaffin cells of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as in blood platelets and in the central nervous system. In the latter, serotonin exhibits inhibitory action and regulates body temperature, emotion, mood, anger, sexuality, apetite, sensory perception and sleep.
