When I started this book, I wasn’t exactly sure if I would like it or not, but after reading a little bit of it, I knew it was going to be a great novel. The author, Lemony Snicket, did a very good job of telling the story with the perfect combination of mystery, suspense, and comedy. One reason I enjoyed reading this book is the fact that the author wrote the book in such a way that you cannot guess what is going to happen next. Despite the fact that you come up with numerous predictions of what is going to happen, what actually happens is so unexpected that you wouldn’t have thought of it as a possibility. A valuable theme that can be derived from the story would be to never let your guard down around people you don’t trust. Here is one quote that can show this, “The orphans were startled for a moment, because he had started running so suddenly” (207). This quote is a great example because the Baudelaires did not trust Count Olaf at all, but he seemed to be doing nothing to harm them. Since he was doing nothing to the children, they thought he had given up on trying to get their fortune which lead to Count Olaf suddenly sprinting at them as an attempt to capture the children.
The author also did a great job of creating the character, Count Olaf. He is both a very sneaky man who comes up with devious plans to catch the Baudelaire orphans, and a highly uneducated person. As a result of being so illiterate, he will often times use words incorrectly, which sets up some comical
