Originally aired on the 20th of March 2014, Sarah Koenig produced the podcast Serial ‘The Alibi’ which demonstrates a wide variety of different techniques and conventions to persuade the listening audience of Adnan’s innocence. The way Koenig’s structures her argument, as shown in the transcript, shows to the audience the uncertainty of the prosecution. Did Adnan kill Hae? Is Adnan being framed by Jay? Many questions like this arise in Koenig’s proposal and how she approaches this case. Points of interest are made, but are then followed by a rebuttal. This technique creates suspense and draws speculation as we are compelled to be into the matter. Pope exemplified a wide use of common techniques and conventions used in cartoons and visual text shown in the image below. Symbolism was presented in an extensive amount of forms using the plane as the major source. The use of images and objects to represent other ideas and messages are exemplified in this cartoon. With that being said, the Essendon ‘bombers’, is used literally in this cartoon as they illustrated as a bomber plane. As seen clearly, the wings of the plane have been torn apart. This may be foreseen as a metaphor and symbolism combined. Essendon are unable to take flight and are incompetent of ‘taking off’ back into the AFL season. They are grounded, much like their sporting club’s professional season and future career. The layout of the cartoon is effectively used, as our main focus is the plane which is positioned in the middle of the illustration. This technique is also called focal point, as the background is blurred, this draws the viewers eyes direct to the bomber plane. As stated before, the use of colours in this cartoon were considered clearly, as the red strip on black indicates the jersey colours of the football club. Dialogue was another technique demonstrated, as it took the form of speech bubbles,” Hey... it’s the drugs-in-sport education bus…”; This can also correlate to the plane not being able to ‘take off’, now being grounded it is referred as ‘bus’. Inter-textual allusions were used, as this cartoon is easily recognisable to associate the Essendon football drug scandal. Under the current circumstances and situation of the football club, it is clear that in the statement “2016 Top-up SEATS, NOW AVALIABLE”, Essendon football are willing to recruit anybody due to the loss of an estimated 24 players from the last news reports. Also in taking consideration to the targeted audience, this cartoon is directed

The vivid red color of the little girl’s dress naturally draws the eye towards the center of the poster first. The young child clutches on to a doll which already falls halfway under the shadow of the swastika. The doll signifies her innocence and childhood and the shadow suggests that the war will cause a loss of innocence and a termination of her childhood. This appeals to the protective instinct within adults as it amplifies the danger of the little girl’s circumstances, using her worried facial expression to further stress the urgency of the threat of war.…

A lot of people want to blame the parents of the offenders, asking “what did you turn your child into?” 36% of serial killers were physically abused, 26% were sexually abused, and 50% were psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). Many people have logically come to the conclusion that just because someone is abused, it does not mean that they will become a serial killer; or even a murderer; which is true. In the general population (people who have never committed murder) only 6% are physically abused, 3% are sexually abused, and 2% are psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). The dramatic difference of abuse frequency between people who are serial killers and people who are not seems evident enough to support that serial killers are created.…

Before Rachels stated his stand regarding the cultural judgment of the “excision” he stated that we, all of the cultures should have at least some of our values or moral codes that each culture has in common. Rachels gives the example of Murder and lying to make his point that we all have some moral codes or virtues that are universal by stating “…there are some moral rules that all societies must have in common, because those rules are necessary for society to exist. The rules against lying and murder are two examples. And in fact, we do find these rules in force in all viable cultures. Cultures may differ in what they regard as legitimate exceptions to the rules, but this disagreement exists against a background of agreement on the larger…

Adnan Syed - Guilty Ever since “The Judiciary Act of 1789”, the United States courts system has been accurately convincing some of the most ruthless and dangerous criminals the world has seen. It has been able to accurately distinguish the difference between innocent and guilty and kept lying criminals from escaping unscathed. The case of Adnan Syed is no different, even though Serial a podcast series narrated by Sarah Koenig may suggest differently. It is evident that Adnan is culpable of killing his ex girlfriend Hae Min Lee because his claim of innocence just does not make sense, and the fact he has a reasonable motive makes him very suspicious; that combined with a witness named Jay, who was willing to testify against his good friend…

The imagery makes a piece of work more realistic and helps the reader to visualise and experience the authors writing in depth. An example of imagery is when Baillie writes “The main scar, a bloodless seam, ran from his right shoulder to his left hip. The second scar was a second, bellybutton punched in his side.
