Serial killers are individuals that murder many people over a period of time with the interval between victims varying. These criminals have different motives in targeting people and usually have similar characteristics: male and Caucasian. There have been many classification systems made by criminologists to classify serial killers. These typologies are used as aid to help law enforcement find and imprison them. Holmes and DeBurger (1988) designed a four- category typology based on method, victim characteristics and killer’s motives. The first category is visionary. The serial killer that fits the profile of this description would be Moses Sithole. After apartheid in South Africa, Sithole began targeting Black women who were unemployed and were looking for work. He posed as a businessman and offered women jobs to lure them (Emerzian, 2007). Sithole fits this category because he exhibited domineering behaviour. He pretended to be a boss, which is someone that takes charge and has dominance over another person. Even in character, he showed that he wanted to dominate women and have power. He also showed this gained authority when he realised that he couldn’t get caught. He wasn’t turned into the police after he raped his girlfriend’s sister, therefore it confirmed and fueled his motivation. Sithole had a warped view of women because of sexual and physical abuse from his mother and other women.
