The film depicted Wuornos as a young child who was born into a dysfunctional family. Aileen Wuornos was born on February 29, 1956 to Diane Wuornos and Leo Dale Pittman. Diane Wuornos married Aileen’s father at the ripe age of fourteen and things quickly took a turn for the worse with them divorcing less than two years later which was two months before Aileen was born. Aileen never got to meet her father who was incarcerated at the time of her birth. Mr. Pittman was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was later convicted of raping a seven year old girl (sex crimes with children) which resulted in him hanging himself in prison. To make matters even worse Aileen’s birth mother abandoned her children when Aileen was only four years old leaving their maternal grandparents Lauri and Britta Wuornos to care for both Aileen and her younger brother Keith. Although her grandparents took her and her sibling in they were alleged of being alcoholics and Aileen even claimed that her grandfather had raped her. Becoming sexually active at the age of ten Aileen admitted that her and her brother Keith had sexual relations which later progressed into her outgrowing her brother and having sex with boys in exchange for money, cigarettes and drugs. In 1970, at the age of fourteen Wuornos became pregnant and had her baby at a home for unwed mothers and was forced immediately to give her baby up for adoption.
