While listening to Serial, I enjoy the fact that it lets you observe an event from both sides, without being biased. I like how it flips back and forth between guilty and innocent, keeping you on your toes. Just like everything, there are no black or white, just shades of gray. Sarah Koenig constantly gives you points that support each side with each new episode and it keeps me wanting to listen to the next episode. Hearing this mystery has awakened my desire to read mysteries such as the Agatha Christie series; but my preference lie in the criminal shows, such as N.C.I.S., Graceland, and all documentaries. I personally love shows that make the viewer consider the seedy side of human nature. True crime shows and podcasts are so popular because …show more content…
These shows and podcasts are the portals to the unknown of the dark side of civilization. I think Serial is different from all of the other horror or mystery shows and movies given that Sarah Koenig uses real testimonies and evidence as well as recent interviews that she has with the witnesses. This also makes the Serial podcast like a documentary about a murder, but you can only listen to it; as entertaining as these true crime shows can be there are drawbacks. No matter how tough a reporter attempts to remain unbiased, as they will always succumb to their own personal biases. In Serial Sarah Koenig states that she hopes that Adnan is innocent or else she would be wanting a guilty man to be set free for the murder of Hae Min Lee. As of right now I believe these types of programs should remain the way that they are and they will provide information and entertainment for people around the world. Horror shows that have demons and zombies are all derived from a person's imagination. There is no scientific evidence defending it; whereas, murders have an intensive use of science to help solve who is the

The United States criminal justice system is infamous (At least in the United States) for its racial bias, wrongful incrimination, and unjust accusations, and Sarah Koenig’s Serial explores that with the case of The State of Maryland Versus Adnan Syed. In 1999, Hae-Min Lee went missing and later was found dead. Jay, a friend of Adnan, went to the police and blamed Adnan for her death. For this journal entry I chose to review the television show, Criminal Minds viewed on 4/11/16. The show, Criminal Minds is based on a team of FBI Profilers who analyzes the un-sub (perpetrator) criminal minds and tries to anticipate the perpetrator’s next move in hopes of apprehending them. Most cases involve a serial killer. In this episode, the Behavioral Analysis Unit, (BAU), is called in to investigate when three people have been murdered in two separate incidents in Los Angeles, California. Ballistics shows the victims were shot multiple times with the same .45 caliber handgun.…

The case of Adnan Syed, a man convicted of murdering Hae Min Lee in 1999, has become a hot-button issue recently thanks to the popularity of a podcast called “Serial”. This podcast followed investigative reporter Sarah Koenig as she went over clues, witnesses, and evidence from the nearly 20-year-old case. While Koenig left the conclusion open-ended, many listeners developed staunch views on both ends of the spectrum. Although it’s not likely that the truth will ever be revealed, one thing is certain, Adnan Syed should never have been convicted. Despite the woefully inept lawyer, there was still a massive amount of doubt surrounding the case and Adnan's guilt.…

Beyond Reasonable Doubt Adnan Syed was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of Hae Min Lee, and sentenced to life in prison plus thirty years on February 25, 2000. But this story started a year earlier, when Hae Min Lee went missing on January 13, 1999. Her disappearance turned into a murder investigation when her strangled body was found February 9, buried in a shallow grave in Leakin Park, Baltimore. This case wasn’t a big news back then, but it was reignited when Serial’s host Sarah Koenig meticulously evaluated the case during a 12-part podcast series in 2014. Since then, it has been exposed the weakness of the state’s case.…

When I watch television shows and movies and begin to analyze them I begin to notice that crime is glamorized while at the same token many societal issues are highlighted. I also begin to realize that crime control is viewed as being easily controlled and justice is always served. The shows I decided to analyze are Scandal an ABC series and The First 48 an A&E series. I decided I would analyze Scandal because it gives an overview of how politics play a role in how crime is controlled and covered up by those in higher positions. On the other hand I decided to analyze The First 48 because it gives an insight to how crimes are solved and how detectives spend their time trying to solve cases.…

Inside A vigilantly Unless you have been living under a rock over the past decade you have probably heard young adults exclaim their excitement to go home and “Netflix and chill”. Several networks have produced hard hitting dramas over the last few years that have Americans “binge-watching” and becoming highly more emotionally invested than ever before. Two of my personal favorites are Kurt Sutter’s: Sons of Anarchy and HBO’s Dexter. Both of the shows depict its main character involved in intense lives of crime.…

Criminal Minds launched in 2005, and was a great success by the middle of the first season. Thomas Gibson, who plays the leader of the FBI profiling team, tells us that he believes the reason the show is so popular is the way it divulges into the minds of the criminals. “People wonder what happened in the criminal’s life to make them commit such crimes” (qtd. In Davis). Another reason Criminal Minds is so popular is that many of the episodes are inspired from true stories and real killers.…

Everything presented in the media-whether it be through television, film, or other means-hinges upon some aspect of reality. Many believe that their television screen is a locked window that separates and protects them from the disturbing aspect of reality that is portrayed in the media. However, crime dramas, like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Criminal Minds, allow the underlying aspects of reality to break through the locked windows of the television and unfold within the audience’s mind by showing the viewer that anyone can be victimized and that the people that one would least expect are more often than not the perpetrator of vicious crimes. Many naive viewers allow themselves to believe that they could never fall victim to…

With all of the violence shown on television today during entertainment programming such as dramas, it’s not surprising that people do not feel as safe as they once did about the society in which they live. It has been argued by many that the coverage of violence on television, has been dominated by storylines revolving around criminal behavior. This dominance or monopoly on the storylines of American television shows has been around for decades. Countless types of television programs have dealt with such topics. There have been numerous crime shows, mysteries, cop/detective shows, and courtroom shows that have become clichés on the small screen due to their frequent appearances on television.…
