Reflective Essay: My Mentorship In My Life

Improved Essays
A mentor is an experienced and trusted adviser, guide, or guru even. If someone was to have a person in their life like this, they would be considered very lucky. Therefore, I believe that I am very fortunate to have met someone like Sergeant Major Rethage in my being. Sergeant Major is the best example of a leader, or role model. He always has a positive attitude. He’s a caring teacher and he’s knowledgeable and compassionate. He provides guidance to all of his students. He helped me to realize who I was. I used to be unsure how to describe myself, but not I can accomplish this without an issue. I believe I am intelligent and adventurous. I noticed that I am very independent while also being dependable. People are able to trust me and rely …show more content…
Sergeant Major and I have established these without evening speaking about them. There is no judgement in this mentorship. I am able to trust him and he can trust me. The most important thing we have in our relationship is acceptance. I accept him for who he is and he does the same for me. He was my mentor from that first week of school of freshmen year up until now. I figured that I needed someone like him in my life. He has helped me on so many occasions that I can not even keep track. The situation that is the most memorable happened during my freshman year. Towards the middle of the year, on November 3rd, my best friend passed away due to cancer. I was a total wreck and his death completely tore me apart. I was devastated. It was a very difficult time in my life. I was tempted to do something drastic that could have ruined the rest of my life. A lot of people don 't like to talk about death. Most people don 't know what to say when someone dies. Sergeant Major knew what to say. Technically he knew what not to say. He let me do the talking and get it all out. There is something about letting out all of your feelings that makes you feel vulnerable or weak. The program helped stitch me back up. They welcomed me with open arms and the cadets are always there for me. They are like my second

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

    LTC Kunk Leadership Style

One of the many Army clichés LTC Kunk tries to operate by is “teach, coach, [and] mentor” (Fredrick, 2017, p 27). Teaching, coaching, and mentoring is defined as “…[instructing] by precept, example, or experience”, “one who instructs or trains, and “a trusted counselor or guide”, respectively. With this knowledge, it becomes clear if a person were to follow these three ideals they would more than likely be an engaged and effective leader. The significance of being an engaged leader is often understated in many corporations and even more so within the United States Army. This has the potential to birth and cultivate a multitude of problems.…

I witnessed my Brigade CSM talking to a young Soldier in the Command Group area. At the time I knew who he was, but I did not realize that he was going to be a mentor to me in the next following months. That CSM happened to be CSM Harbin. During my time as the Command Group Administrative Clerk, I was taught so many things in regards to leadership and setting the example for Soldiers. At the time I was a Specialist, so I did not lead any Soldiers.…

“A leader has to watch every word he or she says and quickly learns that you can’t go through life without a few critics, some well deserved” (pg. 5), this quote as some of the beginning words from MacDonald truly shows that a leader has responsibilities to uphold to. I found it interesting that he showed these responsibilities are not only external, but internal as well. Many do not realize the internal battles that leaders in ministry go through, and in order for leaders to handle a situation in a mature manner; they must uphold to the responsibilities of character they are expected to maintain. There are many internal and external expectations of leaders that are specified in Building Below the Waterline, but only some really stood out to me as factors that I would practice more than others in my leadership positions.…

I, just like many others, just had to hear or think of his death and feel emotions simply because unexpected death is sad and hard to think about especially at my age of 20 when most of the people I know or have ever known are alive and well. This being said, sadness and grief; it’s okay to feel these feelings. Truly, know that it is okay to…

Through this program, I have learned that I am stronger, smarter, and more motivated than I could have ever imagined. Commanding parades and completing a week-long Parris Island boot camp and receiving the NS1 Distinguished Cadet ribbon has changed me. I came into the program as an unruly, out of shape, unrefined teenager. I am almost done with my sophomore year and I am no longer those things. I am smart and I am strong and I am powerful.…

Everyone can say that they always imagined or wanted to look up to someone whether if the person was famous or related to them. Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. I didn’t want a mentor that was a few years older I always wanted someone that was almost twice my age, maybe even older than me. My mentor that I will be talking about name is James. James and I met at my job throughout my time working there I have worked with many managers.…

An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

I still hadn’t quite figured out that he was really gone. I waited at the door till I had to eat or use the bathroom, and then returned to sitting on the floor. Eventually it got to the point where everything began to sink in and by that time, I had already run out of tears to cry. Instead, I was angry; I was mad at my mom for letting him ride a motorcycle, at myself for letting him leave, at him for dying without me knowing it was going to be the last time I would see him alive, and at God for taking away the only person who knew all of my secrets. My older brother, younger sister and I were the only ones who really understood what was going on.…

Throughout my life, I have had many mentors. At times, these mentors were just everyday people but people who lived a different life than I did. As my youth Pastor told me when I told him about my problem with drinking, I need to find a support system. I have to quit lying to myself and saying that I don’t need help and that this is not a big deal. Drinking is a big deal and hard to overcome when faced with an extensive amount of stress but the first step is identifying the cause. On top of the reasons I have listed already, I am experiencing a level of being homesick and distrustful. I feel as if I cannot trust any of the Midshipman completely anymore as they are known for gossiping about each other’s personal lives.…

Coaching Before we get into this it’s important to note the differences of similar terms thrown around. What is the difference between consulting, counseling, coaching, and mentoring? Most people, particularly with mentoring and coaching, use some of these terms interchangeably but I think their are important differences to note. Consulting takes a look at what someone’s doing, analyzes where their going wrong and tells them how to fix it and then walks out the door. Counseling is a form of therapy or health care that provides psychological intervention that often deals with the past and present in trying to ‘fix’ people who have some kind of mental or emotional issue.…

This semester I learned many techniques and lessons regarding how to become a better mentor. Some of the major lessons I learned were related to how I communicated and led others. I learned that I am a leader in the exploration stage and a considerate communicator. Learning these facts about myself help me cater my style of communicating to different mentees and how to recognize how other people see me in the leadership role of mentor. Learning how to find out about how you communicate and about the leadership model in class gave me tools to work on myself as well as tools for me to pass on to my mentees.…
