If someone were to go out and ask the general public to name one famous tennis player, almost everyone would answer Serena Williams. It is not just because she is a common household name either. However, it is because she has a natural talent that everyone recognizes. Her hard work has allowed her to achieve so many great things. Nevertheless, she had to start somewhere before she became the great player she is today. It is her determination to succeed that has made her my favorite tennis player and inspired me. In order for someone to understand why she is a great player, they have to know how she became interested in tennis and her greatest achievements. Serena started playing tennis at the age of three in her family’s home in Compton, California. Her father, Richard Williams, alongside her mother, taught her and her sister on how the game was played. The driving force of her parents did not stop when their family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida when she was nine. She was enrolled in the Tennis Academy of Ricki Macci where her talent continued to grow. Her father had her compete in many junior tennis tournaments where she excelled. If it had not been for her family pushing her, we would not be able to witness her great talent today. …show more content…
She was ranked number one among under ten players in Florida. At the age of seventeen she won her very first Grand Slam singles. Not many people have achieved that. That has led to her going on to win a total of 19 Grand Slams singles. She is so great that many people think she will break Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam Singles. On the other hand, others do not believe that she will be able to since she is close to the age of retirement. However, Navratilova believes that “the way Williams play is key to her chances,” (Reporter).
