The murals on the second floor of the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology are scaled watercolor replications of the those painted on the walls of the so-called Villa of the Mysteries in Italy. They were commissioned by Francis W. Kelsey in 1924 to preserve the amazing images of the frescoes from continuing deterioration and were re-created by Maria Barosso, an Italian artist, over the course of two years. The original images were first painted on the walls of a Roman villa outside of Pompeii and ultimately affected by the infamous eruption of Mount Vesuvius. As they were created near the beginning of the first century, what the murals depict, or why they were created is relatively unknown. There are theories, of course, but Italy today is much different than it was nearly two thousand years ago, so no one knows for certain.…
Leonardo da Vinci was certainly the most well-known and celebrated genius in our modem history who showed his talent not only in painting and drawing, but his work has been exceptional in architecture, anatomy, engineering, military, sculpture, science, and so on. Leonardo’s impressive talent was quickly discovered by Andrea del Verrocchio in his workshop, where Leonardo started to work at a very young age, and continued working after he was ready to go on with his own commissions. “By all accounts Leonardo was a man who painted slowly, although he was capable of producing a finished drawing at incredible speed. In one of the five paintings made in Florence, Ginevra de’ Benci, he showed that he could paint with angelic freedom and responsibility, daring to do things that were virtually impossible.” (Payne, 1978) As we regularly hear from many art historic sources, this particular portrait of Ginerva was so real, that is seemed as it is not a painting but Ginerva herself.…

Hi, Jessica, The theme of purification is recurrent throughout the poetic travelogue as if Basho wanted to get rid of the burden of a life, albeit filled with material rewards that somehow corrupted is inner integrity. Indeed, the convulsive life of the outer world makes it arduous to find the way to enlightenment, to feel the connection with nature and its spirit. Also, the mountains refer to purification, a sort of rebirth, and a metaphoric journey through the challenges of the material world until one reaches a state of unity, as melted with the sacredness of nature. Not surprisingly Basho reaches his spiritual high point on the sacred…
Igor Babailov, a Russian born American artist once said, “Artists with the lack of proper education and experience of working from life will copy whatever is visible on the photograph, without knowing what's underneath. As a result, instead of creating the in-depth and full of character portrait, they draw a mask with no soul.” Without question Leonardo Da Vinci captured souls. His 15th Century contributions remain supreme whether they be in art, science, mathematics, engineering, writing or music. Such was Leonardo’s ability he enjoyed recognition and support as he created artworks such as the Mona Lisa and the less famous, Ginevra de benci.…
