I chose the basal reading program because it has many advantages for new teachers. It offers a sequenced evidence-based approach to reading instruction. It’s also helpful for the beginning teachers who haven't had time to develop their own strategies. The reading basal provides teachers’ guidance books that help the teachers prepare their lesson plans. Sometimes even scripting the words teachers should say to their students in presenting decoding and comprehension concepts.
In addition to that, the reading basal program offers a variety of assessment tools and activities in which teachers can use for each lesson and after each unit such as pre-test, post-test, and group activities to develop the student’s reading skills. It can also be used

Two examples of other informal reading assessments are the Phonics Mastery Survey and Phonemic Awareness Assessments. The Phonics Mastery Survey is an informal tool for assessing various phonics elements. This assessment measures a student’s ability to recognize consonant sounds, rhyming words, consonant digraphs, long vowel sounds, words with CVC patterns, consonant blends, variant vowel sounds, and syllables in words (DeVries 2011 p.112). A student’s ability to use knowledge of sound/letter correspondences to decode words, determines his or her ability to read individual words. Knowing the skills that the students possess will assist the teacher in selecting reading tasks that offer the most effective reinforcement of those phonics skills.…

S’niya, a fourth-grade student at Miramar Elementary School, was given four assessments from a Scholastic resource packet that helps to determine what level of reading a student is currently achieving. The Scholastic resource assessments allow a teacher to establish an idea of the student’s reading proficiency and also helps to conclude what sort of instructional plan would best suit the needs of each individual student. With the Clinical Educator’s discretion, S’niya was assigned to complete a third-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment, and a fourth-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment. Based on past test scores, the teacher speculated that was a possibility that S’niya was not working on par with her grade level.…

According to the session 3 module in M464, “content area teachers must work within the students’ Zones of Proximal Development (ZPD) and scaffold instruction by using the Before-During-After (BDA) Framework.” Following the BDA Framework ensures that teachers set a purpose for reading by making use of strategies that come before, during, and after reading. Second grade is an amazing year for young students. This is when the English Language Arts learning begins transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. The PA standards reflect that the student’s learning should focus on reading fluency, comprehension, and phonemic skills in addition to introducing, identifying, and using literary devices. There is a lot that the teachers need to cover in English Language Arts and that is why integration is my favorite thing. Many of the skills that need to be addressed during the year can be paired with other techniques that are desired for the students learning.…
