The plane was going to Los Angeles from Boston, and had ninety-two people on board. About fifteen minutes later, at 8:14 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 took off. This plane had sixty-five people on board and was also travelling from Boston to Los Angeles. Five minutes later, at 8:19, flight attendants Betty Ong and Madeline Sweeney, who are aboard American Airlines Flight 11 report to ground personnel that the flight is being hijacked. The North Tower did not collapse as soon as the South Tower because the impact on the North Tower was higher than the South. By 10:30, New York City governor George Pataki declared a state of emergency for New York. After both towers collapsed, everything in Manhattan was covered in dust and dirt, making the city looked almost black and white. Many people in Manhattan were tried to get out of the impact zone, going to Broadway and Greenwich. (“One Nation” 49, 67). At 11:00 a.m., New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani called for an evacuation of lower Manhattan. This area included more than one million residents and tourists.
