Lab 3 – Separation of a Mixture of Solids

Pelab Questions: Proposed procedure for separation of a mixture: Use physical properties of the 4 substances to separate.
1. Remove iron with magnet
2. Add water to the mixture to melt the benzoic acid and NaCl then filter out sand.
3. Chill the solution and scoop the acid out leaving a salt solution. 4. Boil water away leaving salt.
Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to learn separation techniques using individual physical properties of each substance in the mixture.

There were still a few clumps in the bottom of the Styrofoam cup which could make our benzoic acid mass lower than it should be. Dr. Audia told us we should have used a beaker so it would not stick to the side as easily. 5. While filtering the solution we noted a few floating crystals on top of the NaCl solution after filtering. The student pouring the solution into the filter commented on the solution being warm. We did not leave the solution in the ice bath long enough to cool. Therefore our salt mass may be higher and the benzoic acid mass lower than it should be.

Lab Questions:
A. How did your proposed procedures or flow charts at the beginning of this experiment compare to the actual procedures of this lab exercise? The method was similar to the instructions used in the manual. This student used benzoic acid in an experiment in 151 so I knew that the benzoic acid would crystallize in the cold water and would float.
