All the products that surround the American person are most likely labeled “Made in China.” Globalization, which is defined as the process in which businesses or organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale, is to thank for this. Though all of the products we enjoy today are magnificent, some come at a cost. The price we purchase goods at might be rather low, but the price the world is paying for globalization is immeasurable. Globalization is creating a worse world by further separating social classes, stripping individuals of jobs, and leading to inhumane working environments. When jobs are displaced or terminated, people suffers. Unfortunately, when jobs are lost due to globalization, it is usually due to companies moving their manufacturing to places that allow them to produce goods for a smaller amount. For example, the company Parker Hannifin relocated their company to cut back on the cost of production. A spokesperson claims the business simply does “what is best to serve our customers and our stockholders” (Reading #3). However, they don’t keep in mind the well-being of their own employees. The company had to eliminate multiple jobs in the United States, reducing the quality of life for the unemployed. One former Parker Hannifin employees described the losses her and her colleagues experienced, “We lost our health care, our living wages. The winners are the corporate executives who don’t even live here and can locate their factories wherever they find the cheapest labor” (Reading #3). The wealthiest are the corporate executives, and they aren’t able to sympathize those who work in their factories. When these people lose their jobs, they lose everything. Many are unable to find work in another factory, as almost all businesses are moving their manufacturing to developing nations. Everyone has the basic right to be able to find employment in a field that is safe and fair. Companies must care about their employees instead of treating them as just merely a portion of an assembly line. Globalization is the product of corporations seeking the lowest production cost. In order to maximize profit, businesses commit atrocities such as paying dismal wages, providing unsanitary and unsafe working environments, and instilling fear in employees. Companies in the United States are becoming so brutal that many employers will “regularly threaten to shut down and ‘move to Mexico’ if workers organize into unions” (Reading #1). No one should have to walk into their workplace each day with the fear that it will be their last. Those who unionize are normally the ones that are attempting to gain better working conditions, signifying that their existing work environment isn’t the greatest. If one’s job is already miserable, adding the stress of no job security can cause a serious decrease in their quality of life. On the other hand, those who work in developing countries endure much worse experiences. For example, “Teenage women in China make toys for Mattel. They work as much as 18 hours a day, seven days a week in 104-degree temperatures. They handle toxic chemicals with their bare hands and make as little as 13 cents an hour”
