Separating Into Small Groups

Overall, my group experience was predominantly a positive one. We decided to present our speech about various anti-war movements throughout the United States’ history. We were able to assign different people to cover different wars. We agreed to let Nate and Kate tackle a war by themselves because they both already knew a lot about the topic. So then Marissa and Courtney covered Vietnam, and Reagan and I covered WWII. Separating into smaller groups was a great idea because it divided the work between all of us to ensure everyone was contributing. I was extremely fortunate to have had respectful, dedicated individuals working alongside me.
In chapter sixteen, goal setting is identified as an important part of group and team building. Not all students are naturally driven to complete admirable work. Setting goals along the way can provide a guide to achieving excellence. At the conclusion of each out of class meeting, we would discuss what we wanted everyone to have accomplished by our next gathering. Establishing goals let everyone know what responsibilities needed to be finished by next time. These goals also ensured our group was staying on track and making progress towards presentation day. We would recap our goals numerous times and discussed what we hoped to achieve in

In chapter sixteen, the author states the best way to maintain a positive group environment is to communicate. While my group did not have any alarming conflicts, there were a few incidents where we disagreed. I think we tried to muddle through by expressing our thoughts. We had a group vote to decide if we should include a piece of material in our speech. Even though the majority voted no, the person voting yes was still adamant about using said material. So, each person shared their reasons and asked the individual what they thought too. Eventually we were able to cut the part and move on, but it definitely took some

I was very happy when we came together as a group because I’ve never been in a group with any of these people before and I was excited to work with them. One of the strengths from our group’s presentation was that we all included lots of helpful information on PTSD on our respective slides, which will hopefully teach the class something about the mental illness. Another strength of our presentation was how it looked. Kristina and I spent lots of time going over the aesthetic of the entire presentation to make sure every slide matched (ex: using the same font and colours).…

In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

Clearly defined and communicated objectives are essential to “provide a roadmap for both students and teachers” (p. 8). By knowing what you want students to achieve in the end, you are able to construct a lesson that supports student learning and create assessments that accurately gauge knowledge gained. For students, knowing what they are supposed to learn gives them the opportunity to focus on essential information and allows them to take some responsibility over their…

My experience has been interesting, positive, and at the same time rewarding. My very first experience with working in group was couple of years ago during a final year project, in my country of birth. The project was in community medicine, and involved repeated trip to a rural community by my group to access their health status, and needs. We had many challenges, but overcame them all as a group. I learnt the act of collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making by consensus building, and most importantly; comradeship.…

Everyone who wants to do something in life, they need a goal to get there. For example, I have a goal for getting an honors award this year. First, I am going to aim for getting 90%, if I don’t get 90%, at least I will get something above 80%, so I can get the honors award. It is just like the saying if you shoot for the moon and miss then you will at least land on the stars. Secondly, I will ask my home room teacher or tutor for help if I don’t understand the question and I will also finish all of my homework every day.…

The importance of the discussions with the other groups was that we learned about the different opinions that the different groups at the Convention had, and how we could work together to get what we want. Another lesson I learned was that you have to be careful when bartering with other groups, because you don’t want to give away some of your group’s plans, or reveal something that could cause them to go against you. The factions we used impacted the Convention because we included the slaves even when they were not really represented, and…

Goal setting is a mental technique that helps one to identify what you want to achieve in the future and working towards achieving it. It can be a means of implementing change and performance in an organisation. For goals to be effective it has to be SMART that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. You could say we went through the “forming” and “storming” stages of group work that semester. Second semester, after we had an opportunity to analyze each other’s strengths, we were able to work much more efficiently. We evolved into a united group with common goals, and this evolution is reflected in the deliverables we created in 732 to 752. We learned a lot about the questions to ask when designating roles on a project and paying attention to identify these strengths. We also learned about our own strengths in the process.…

Overall, I was extremely happy with the effort my group put into this project. In terms of attending the group meetings, everyone was present and participated in the discussion. The first meeting took place on a Sunday afternoon at Baruch and the second meeting took place on a weeknight in the form of a Google Hangout. The times and places of these meetings alone displayed every group members’ commitment to the project, effort to accommodate for scheduling conflicts, and effort to ensure they are contributing their fair share to the group regardless the time or day of the week. At these meetings, we discussed ways to engage the crowd and critiqued each other’s slides and presentations.…
