Is this you? About 15-20% of the population are highly sensitive people. What a highly sensitive person (HSP) is a person who “has a sensitive nervous system, is aware of subtleties in his/her surroundings, and is more easily overwhelmed when in a highly stimulating environment” (Aron, 2018). There is another name for this personality trait is Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS), this name is from the fact that they have a sensitive nervous system which can make their senses stronger when in a noisy environment. HSP is not defined as a disorder but as a trait, although HSP is not a good trait to have, it is also not bad; there are many people who can find the benefits within their given trait. The scale/test contains 27 items intending to measure various aspects of SPS/HSP. There are tests available online to take if one would be curious to see if they possibly had the HSP trait. If one were to score high enough on the test, they would probably have the trait, but since this is simply an online test it should be taken with a grain of salt. The test could be wrong or someone could manipulate their own answers because they want to have the trait. Elaine Aron began studying of the innate temperament trait of high sensitivity in 1991, her and her husband Dr. Arthur Aron, are two of the leading scientists studying the psychology of love and close relationships. Dr. Elaine Aron was also the writer for the documentary Sensitive: The Untold Story. This documentary that covers a dense amount of information, a wide range of how and where this trait shows up. This is all done in a way that is very clear, and intelligent and touching, so people who do not know anything about this trait can easily follow along. In the film, Aron explains that many HSPs ends up switching jobs often even their whole career. They typically go to start their own business or work for themselves. This husband and wife duo wanted to do something they could do at home but also change the world at the same time. There are also people who show that having HSP is not a downfall, John Hughes is a perfect example of a sensitive man dominating in the business world.
