In the article, A Sensible Antiporn Feminism by A. W. Eaton, he states that children at an early age are pushed into the gender roles of males being masculine while females are feminine, which can also be seen in movies, music, magazines, art, and more. Within pornography, gender roles can be seen as the male to be oppressive of the female even though the pleasure and desires appeal to both genders. The harms hypothesis stated by Eaton shows that gender inequality takes part in the disadvantages and injustice that women suffer compared to men and the appeal that attracts people to pornography. Due to gender inequality, recommendation and endorsement of degradation and oppression of women is a form of harm as there is a decrease in respect to how women should be treated in reality. Even though the pornography presentation seems appealing to desires and that women enjoy this kind of behavior, it is only through the production that it may seem to be enjoyable while it is not. Not all pornography shows violence and harm, which means that any non-violent pornography is considered to be harmless since it allows a person to become aroused, but also for those in the production to attain their pleasures. According to Eaton, making “gender inequality into a source of sexual gratification” allows gender inequality to be tolerated as well as desirable and appealing as it is harmless to be pleasured and aroused by pornography and have no reason to be banned or regulated (Eaton 679). In addition, if there were no consequence to bad actions or crimes, people would believe that it is okay to continue to do what they do. It is part of human nature to believe that the continuation of activities without a return of negative actions would be a positive connotation, which increases the action of the ongoing activities. In addition, studies from other countries, such as Denmark and Japan, have shown that no matter there is an increase or decrease in watching pornography, the sex crime rate has the opposite effect.
