The book The Kite Runner, is written by Khaled Hosseini. The Kite Runner takes place mostly in Kabul, Afghanistan, during the time period 1963-1981 and Fremont, California, during the time period 2001. In the book The Kite Runner, there is a wide variety of characters, which will be discussed in depth later on. The narrator and protagonist in the story is Amir. Amir struggles throughout the book feeling bad and trying to redeem himself for betraying his half brother, Hassan. The antagonist is Assef, he ruins the lives of Hassan and Sohrab by leaving a permanent scar on them, by raping them. The main characters in the story are, Hassan and Baba. Sense of place is the state of mind derived through the infusion of a place with meaning and emotion by remembering important events that occurred in that place or by labeling a place with a certain character. Perception of place is belief or "understanding" about a place developed through books, movies, stories or pictures. This is an example of Sense of place, “ Now the pitch was a mess. There were holes and craters everywhere, most notably a pair of deep holes in the ground…” (Hosseini 234). This is an example of Sense of Place, because Amir is from Afghanistan, and he knows what it is like there through personal experience. This is another example of Sense of place, because he is comparing events that happened in Afghanistan with similar stuff in America, “ He was American, just like the friendly, longhaired men and women we always so hanging around in Kabul, dressed in their tattered, brightly colored shirts” (Hosseini 20). This is an example of perception of place, “ Fremont, California. 1980’s Baba loved the idea of America,” Baba had never been to America, but he might have seen in books, movie, stories, or pictures of America that make him think of how lovely America
