When a child has hit the preschool age they become more and more independent from here on out. They no longer need an adult to be able sustain themselves. This is because children have learned what they need to do to survive and how to self-sustain. Now an adult will obviously still need to do the large things such as prepare and serve the food but the adult will no longer need to feed the child or clean up after them. Because of this parents begin to have more respect and trust for the Childs ability’s. When a child feels trusted and respected they will show the adult the same by taking on small chores around the house to better the family dynamic aspect. A 3 year old should be expected to be able to use a spoon not as skilled as an adult but they should have the concept of being able to put the spoon in the food and bring it to their mouth. They should also start using a fork around this age but should always be watched closely when using it. Unlike a new born a 3 year old will eat smaller portions and fewer meals throughout the day. Raw fruits and veggies are healthy snacks throughout the day to maintain a healthy energy level. It is noted that because children have found their sense of independence they should not feel or be pressured into eating a meal. In terms of dressing themselves depending on the child and the environment they were raised in they might pick something that corresponds to their gender or is opposite. However children should not feel punished for picking out something to wear that might not correspond to their gender because you don’t want them to feel negative for expressing themselves. As an adult it is a good idea to suggest other things that might be more appropriate. At the age of four a child is fully able to dress themselves from head to toe however if a problem occurs it will not take long for the child to become upset.
