In today’s society there is a larger group of people who feel they are entitled to things that they did not earn. The actions may be caused differences in how they were raised by their parents, or it may be that they have a sense of entitlement because things have been freely afforded to them by government agencies. Older generations hold their perceptions of the Generation Y age group and their expectation of unearned “rights”. These factors will be analyzed so that the speculation of root causes can be identified.

Although some people are genuinely in need of government assistance, others use the programs as a permanent crutch. As the parent will give in to the child, the government gives to individuals in the hope to correct bad behavior. Welfare for example is intended as a subsidy and not as a way of life, but due to poor management, some people trade the responsibility of a job in lieu of free money they feel entitled to. In Tampa, FL, news channel 8 did a story on Angel Adams who has 15 children and blames the government even though she receives assistance to pay for her rent amongst other things. She stated that “somebody needs to pay for all my children…for all of our suffering, somebody needs to be held accountable, and somebody needs to pay” (Slavo, 2011). Maybe not having 15 children should have been a priority if she had no means to support them. The government’s recent controversial support of “rights” for illegal immigrants has given a false sense of entitlement by conveying the message that if you come to this country illegally, we will give handouts in the form of welfare, drivers licenses, and the ability to vote in elections. These actions then create a culture that thinks “if you did it for them, why not do it for me”? The only thing that people are entitled to is what they have earned. To expect that somebody else is going to carry the burden of your own shortcomings is just wrong. From the time a child is young until they are in their senior years, the expectation is that they will be a contributing member of society and work hard for the things that they have. Those who earn their own living have less of an entitlement issue, because they display a different sense of pride that comes with achieving their life goals through a determination focused work ethic. Personal responsibility comes down to controlling what you can control. Things in your life will happen that are completely out of your control, but responding to the situations that you can control will have a more positive effect on your
