“It was all just big joke!, I’ve should’ve known a girl like me could never fit in with a group of people like them." It was a fun and games until Senró Ines handed me the items of mortification. This is what I receive for being “the best behaved” and so I thought. I helped them hand out cake, assisted them with the hotdogs and put up with Luciana’s cousin. “You and your mother do your homework together?” asked the girl the bow, giggling. She was no different than Regina George, but she didn’t end up in a back brace only a minor bruise. The worst part is, she was right. I wasn’t there has a guest, I was there as one of there petty maids. They played me like a piano. They used me for there own benefit. The highlight of this lesson would be the sack race because the boys shadowed me. It was the event that I felt wanted. Also, holding the monkey to prove that I was the bravest. …show more content…
No hostis would ask one of the guest to lend a hand with tasks. I was stuck in a misconception. I think I overestimated myself because they read me like a short novel “Thank you for all your help, my pet” said Senró Ines. It was at that moment when I realized I was just another helping

I don’t know how anyone could forget their family heritage especially if they were proud of it. The pride and joy of my family’s heritage comes from my family member Perucho Figueredo, who wrote Cuba’s national anthem, “El Himno de Bayamo”, in 1867. Many years ago, when my Grandma was an immigrant from Cuba and encountered hardships on her journey to the land of the free. My Grandma’s side was related to Perucho Figueredo.…

Jose Vargas’s story is one of fear, secrets, and struggles with a glimmer of hope at the end. You may see all of his struggles as just a mass of problem after problem without any significance in the individual stories. I do not believe this to be true. I believe one story in particular was used as an excellent tool. The story of Jose’s coming out as a homosexual was used to show what was to come.…

“Isla” by Virgil Suarez is a powerful image of migration through the eyes of a young boy. Suarez uses this narrative, free-verse poem as a personal experience of his migration from Cuba. His reference to Godzilla helps the reader connect with his experience (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). In the poem, Suarez begins by using allusions to make the poem more relevant to the reader.…

This lack of friendship is further proven by the Ines family’s actions in using Rosaura as a servant. They consistently remove Rosaura from the party to get juice or cut cake. If Luciana viewed Rosaura as a friend, she would have attempted to be around her more and tried to introduce her to others throughout the party. Instead, she left Rosaura to meet others on her own and assist her parents alone. This marks Rosaura’s progression from a young, socially ignorant child to a more aware adolescent whom can recognize the difference between friendship and…

Rosaura is so pleased with the party that even though she thought she would be “angry with her mother” the “first thing” she tells her about is the magician and the monkey and how the magician called her a “countess.” Her mother is obviously extremely relieved that Rosaura had a good time and did not face any of the inequality she had feared her daughter might as she stands there “beaming.” Señors Ines then however asks Rosaura and her mother to wait a second. Rosaura’s mother suddenly becomes “worried” and asks Rosaura what is happening; Rosaura assures her mother that Señora Ines is just getting “presents” for the kids that are leaving. Rosaura waits expectantly for the presents and wonders if Señors Ines would even “give her two presents” as she was, in her mind, the “best behaved” out of all the guests.…

There were 58 kids that went out for the freshman baseball team, 21 kids made the A/B team. The other 37 kids were on C team. Going into the first practice I was picturing myself in that group of 37 on the C team. One of the reasons I pictured myself on C team was because most kids going out for baseball were 8-10 months older than me and were about 4-6 inches taller than I was. But kids being older and bigger didnt not determined how hard I worked.…

In reviewing the poem Isla, written by Virgil Suarez, I believe that Suarez is speaking about his life and the challenges that they had to endure while in the Caribbean’s. The first image that I see use is Godzilla, which I see it as describing how he and his family may have felt moving from a place that they once called home and then been forced to live in a foreign place. The writer references Godzilla because he wants his readers to see how the mother and child felt being somewhere he did not use to, feeling “unwanted, exiled, how you move from one country to another where nobody you” (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). I think the writer is trying to express how his family may have felt when they left their country in order to have a better life.…

The Story of Pedro Serrano, as told by el Inca, Garcilaso de la Vega, had a deep impact on me. More specifically, the part that was most was the first interaction between Serrano, the main character, and the other unnamed survivor that was introduced halfway through the short story. Serrano had been stranded on the island for three years and had acquired hair all over—so much so, that it was compared by de la Vega to “an animal’s pelt.” The new survivor on the island was still dressed as a normal Spanish sailor, whereas Serrano had seemed to morph into a different person all together—one who was as mentally unstable as he was physically. When these two very different characters met for the first time, they were both shocked.…
