I had no idea that Dr. Gilliam’s class would ignite my passion for education. I was one of the girls who appeared to have everything. I had great socialization skills, but I was terrified of public speaking. Dr. Gilliam was about to alter the course of my life. When the butterflies began to turn in my stomach, she encouraged me by saying, “You’ve got this, Terrie.” By second semester, not only did I develop a love for her class, but I also joined the debate team. I sat in amazement: amazed at the fact that I developed such a strong rapport with the most feared teacher on campus; amazed that I had not missed one day of the class; amazed that I had developed a love for education and yearning to absorb more knowledge to share with so many. Instilled within me was a passion for education—something that I strive to do for all the lives that I touch. I believe that an educator is to be caring, competent, effective and so much more. Additionally, I believe the goal of education is to create confident, self-actualized, independent thinkers and lifelong learners, with the basic skills necessary to become productive members of society. If afforded the opportunity, acceptance into your preeminent institute of higher learning will strengthen my ability to continue in passing on the torch of wisdom,
