In FY2016, SU-CASA funds, through the Department of Cultural Affairs City Council Initiative, supported IATI Theater’s Latin Dance Senior Swing Workshop, a cultural engagement program brought to United NSC in Brooklyn. This body awareness workshop taught and promoted the Latin culture while dancing and learning the history of the best known Latin social dances. Taught by our dance instructor Walter Perez, based on the exceptional dance idioms of Tango, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and Cha-Cha, all sessions/classes of this workshop focused on posture, body placement, alignment and musicality.

To engage seniors, printed flyers got distributed and posted in the center and the community. In addition, we visited the center and personally presented the workshop while seniors attended other social activities in the center.

Each 2-hour-class included a 15 minute warm-up; then another 15 minutes on walking forward, backward, side-by-side, face-to-face, different timings, alone and with a partner, to practice balance, rhythm and synchronization. The rest of the time,

We even had the privilege of being visited by Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez. She and other politician watched the class and even got to do a little dance at the end.

Showcase: June 29, 2016
The Latin Dance Senior Swing Program culminated in a showcase event at the center where seniors had the opportunity to show off what they had learned to the invited guests. For this event we had band playing live music and two professional dancers as part of the entertainment. There were also Latin style hors devours, refreshments, and some souvenirs for the participants and other people who attended the event.

On the night of September 30th, I was able to attend the Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra’s concert at Baldwin Wallace University. A feature that made them unique was their ability to arrange modern songs into a salsa format. It was a lively performance where many audience members danced along with the band, demonstrating the danceable feature of the music. The orchestra used many of the traditional salsa instruments, including timbales, conga drums, a cowbell, and a guiro.…

We could pick an appropriate Spanish movie that highlights a Spanish-speaking country’s culture to play for not only our members, but also for all Spanish students, even those at the junior highs. This would be an opportunity to promote our club to future members and for students to improve their comprehension skills. The event could take place in the LGI with popcorn or other traditional snacks. Furthermore, I want to establish a more organized system of tutoring that matches a committed Spanish Honor Society member with a Dawson Spanish student. Spanish teachers would tell their classes that if desired, a student could have a SHS tutor.…

Hispanic Heritage Month: Starting September 15th, and to October 15th our Spanish class celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month. It was an interesting learning experience overall, and it made for some unique days in class that could’ve otherwise been what seemed like days of more paperwork and material to study. (Which isn’t exactly a bad thing either.) There were some things that I enjoyed, but also some things that could’ve been improved upon. So, what about our celebration in class of Hispanic Heritage Month stood out the most to me?…

Centro Latino, which is located on the second floor of the Dobbs University Center, West Wing, was festively decorated with flags of the countries that encompass the Latino community. For centuries, song and dance have been a vital part in creating and expressing a community’s sense of identity. Through each, members are able to pass on traditions, make political statements, and express themselves. The tango and salsa styles of music and dance are prime examples of mobilities in Latin American music that help foster a sense of identity among the smaller communities, although each required international attention before earning recognition from its home country. Each style of music is a special hybrid of all kinds of influences, demonstrating a deep history that can also give some insight to the social outlook of the times. Despite the time gap between the emergence of the two styles (tango first appearing in the early 19th century while salsa came into the scene around the 1970s), both styles have contributed a significant impact in establishing a sense of identity among Latin American music.…

Swerving around a mass sea of students while quickly glancing at my schedule and the classrooms around me, I was a new student trying to find my classes at the large campus of Neuqua Valley High School. Even though it was my junior year, I was a new student after transferring schools and was unfamiliar with the campus and with many of the students there, until I found out about a hip-hop/breakdancing club called Urban Arts Club (UAC). Since I was ten years old, I have always been interested in learning how to breakdance, but I was not able to learn when I lived in Vietnam. After discovering UAC, I anxiously joined the club to learn how to breakdance and to try and become acquainted with the students of the club. As a new member of UAC, I learned the fundamentals of breakdancing, began practicing with the other members, and helped out the current and new members in order…

It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up.
