This passage makes me question if she has a serious relationship or if she is behaving provocatively because she is seeking acceptance and to feel desirable and loved.
It is evident that her nose has been bothering her for years, squelching her self-esteem. Upon overhearing Terri make fun of it, she thinks back to her mother’s comforting words that it will become less noticeable as she ages. Further, she mentions how much she despises the fact that she inherited the awful nose from the men in her family.
Her low self esteem suffered another blow as she listened to Lightening Bolt’s reaction to Terri’s exaggerations about her features and ultimately revealing that she looks like an Indian. In order to stop other people from judging her based on her nose, the narrator decides to reshape it by squeezing it on a daily basis.
Years after the narrator ended her relationship with Terri, it is yearbook picture day. She is convinced that squeezing her nose all these years has made a huge difference; from this day forward, people won’t notice her nose; they won’t notice that she is Indian or judger her for
