As I understand web analytics, it means to collect data related to traffic to a particular site and the subsequent flow of traffic on that site so as to analyze consumer pattern in order to optimize the site to maximize productivity of that site. [1] Data can also be collected of the traffic to the site related to the prior sites visited and the subsequent sites visited so as to better understand the consumer pattern and with the prospects of collaboration with the other business sites to serve the customer better and also increase net profit/productivity of the businesses concerned.

[4] Senior management has had their way of running the business based on their gut feelings and maybe some data along with their broad understanding of the business. When some of their decisions or past practices can be questioned by web analytics, it can be a difficult situation. Besides, analytics is good only when the analysts are good and their decisions have led to success in the past. Hence, a newbie claiming to be an analyst and trying to change the decision making of the organization can be met with mistrust. Also, analytics is not completely evolved to have gained much trust. It is still in its developing stage with a lot of work still to be done to be a real predictor of consumer behavior with a high confidence level. [6] This single visitor may visit the site any number of times over a period of time. However, this single visitor has its own unique identity. The above definition is quite simple to understand for us humans. However, online determination of a unique visitor is different and is not foolproof. The unique visitor is identified as unique based on its IP address. This determination of the IP addresses of every visitor is done by using a log analyzer and server log files. However, some ISPs and anonymizer services give the appearance that lots of people have the same IP address. Log analyzer will not be able to differentiate them then and will count all these different visitors though with the same IP address as unique visitor. Also, if the website’s audience happens to be mostly from the same area, the chances of having the same IP address increases and hence the unique visitor is not correctly identified. It is also possible that the single visitor may have different IP addresses over time and hence may be incorrectly identified as different visitor. Also, any person may have access to that computer from the visitor’s end such as family members using the same computer. The log analyzer will not be able to differentiate between the family members and will consider the entire family as single unique visitor.
